Middlesbrough, to their credit, kept it simple. They sat in, stayed compact, and took their opportunity when it came. That is how you compete when you are the team with less of the ball. You stay disciplined and you make the one chance count. Boro did exactly that.

Morris Gives Burnley the Lead

Aidan Morris put Burnley ahead on 23 minutes with a left-foot finish, assisted by Sebastian Berhalter. It was a deserved lead at that point. Burnley were the better side, moving the ball with purpose, creating space in dangerous areas.

The problem was what came next. Or rather, what did not come next. Burnley had the game there to be won in that first half and they did not put it away. Three big chances missed over the course of 90 minutes tells its own story. When you are at home and you are on top, you have to kill the game. That is the most basic rule in football.

Hannibal Booked, Then Gone at Half-Time

Middlesbrough had their own problems to deal with. Hannibal picked up a yellow card on 28 minutes for a foul. By the time the half-time whistle went, the Boro manager had seen enough. Hannibal was replaced by Max Alleyne at the start of the second half, with Largie Ramazani also coming on at the same time to replace Andréas Hountondji.

The thing is, those double substitutions changed the game. Middlesbrough came out with more energy in the second period. They were more direct. They created more threat from wider areas, putting in 18 total crosses across the match compared to Burnley's 10. The basics of getting the ball in the box more often shifted the momentum.

Raghouber Levels It Up

On 54 minutes, Ugo Raghouber equalised for Middlesbrough with a left-foot finish, with Zeki Amdouni providing the assist. It was a sucker punch. Burnley had done the hard part, taken the lead, and then allowed Boro back into the match by failing to add a second goal when they had the chances to do so.

The attitude after going behind at half-time was fine from Boro. You have to give them that. They competed. They showed desire. They came out and made something happen. That is what you do when you are 1-0 down at the break.

Burnley Push But Cannot Find a Winner

Burnley made their own changes on 61 minutes, bringing on Leo Castledine for Kyle Joseph and Tommy Conway for Riley McGree. They pushed to get back in front. They had 111 total attacks over the course of the game. They had 60 dangerous attacks. They had 9 key passes.

And yet they finished with two shots on target. Two. With that level of attacking activity, two shots on target is a conversion problem that goes beyond bad luck. You have to be more clinical. You have to take your opportunities when they arrive. That is accountability. That is the standard required.

Alfie Jones picked up a yellow card on 71 minutes and was then substituted off three minutes later for Ashley Phillips. Middlesbrough also made further changes, bringing on Aaron Ramsey for Amdouni at 71 minutes, Armando Broja for Jacob Bruun Larsen at 77, and Mike Tresor late on. Boro used all five of their substitutions. Burnley used three. The Boro bench contributed energy. Whether it contributed quality is another question.

What the Numbers Tell You

Burnley won 43 duels to Middlesbrough's 35. They made 10 interceptions to Boro's 9. They completed more successful dribbles. They had more corners, more attacks, more dangerous attacks, more key passes. On nearly every territorial measure, Burnley were the better side.

But Middlesbrough had more shots inside the box, six to Burnley's four. They had three shots on target to Burnley's two. And they scored one goal from their opportunities while Burnley, who created three big chances, also scored one. The ruthlessness was not there from the home side. It has not been there in recent matches either.

Recent Form Cannot Be Ignored

Listen, Burnley's recent form coming into this match was poor. In their last three Championship matches before tonight, they had lost to Norwich by 1-4 and to West Brom by 1-3, with a 2-2 draw against West Ham United their only point in that period. Nine goals conceded across those three matches. Zero clean sheets. The defensive record alone should have been a talking point before a ball was kicked tonight.

Tonight's display was better defensively. They kept Middlesbrough to one goal. Will Lankshear picked up a yellow card early on for a foul but the overall defensive effort was more organised than previous weeks. There is something to build on there. But you cannot keep gifting points away by missing big chances at home. That has to stop.

Middlesbrough came into the game with five Championship matches in their sample, winning two, drawing one, and losing two, scoring seven and conceding six. A functional team. Not spectacular. But they know how to compete and how to take points on the road when the opportunity presents itself.

The Verdict

A draw felt like a bad result for Burnley and a decent one for Middlesbrough. That is the reality. When you create three big chances at home and miss all three, you do not deserve to win. That is not harsh. That is honest.

The standards have to be higher. The execution in the final third has to be better. Burnley had everything they needed tonight except the one thing that wins football matches. They did not put the ball in the net when it mattered. Sort that out, and there is a decent side in there. Leave it unaddressed, and these are the results you get.
