Athletic Club 2-1 Real Sociedad: Williams Leads Basque Derby Win Despite Sociedad's Dominance

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Athletic Club 2-1 Real Sociedad. Write it down. Because what happened on Sunday night was not a comfortable home win. It was a smash-and-grab. A ruthless one. And in a derby, that counts double.

The Basics Won It

Real Sociedad had 62 per cent of the ball. They attempted 597 passes to Athletic's 366. They put 14 shots on goal and had five on target. They won 45 duels to Athletic's 33. On almost every number you care to look at, Sociedad were the better team.

Athletic won the match. The thing is, that is what desire and attitude look like when they are working properly. You compete, you execute when it matters, and you take your chances. Athletic did exactly that.

Williams Strikes Early, Sannadi Forced Off

The tone was set inside the first quarter of an hour. Robert Navarro was forced off in the sixth minute, replaced by Maroan Sannadi, which disrupted whatever Sociedad had planned from the start. Whether that unsettled them or not, Athletic punished them at the earliest opportunity.

Iñaki Williams put Athletic ahead in the 14th minute with a right-foot shot, assisted by his brother Nico Williams. That is a combination that gives defenders nightmares. Simple execution. Clinical. Exactly the kind of goal that changes the atmosphere of a derby inside twenty minutes.

Sociedad fought back well. Luka Sucic levelled with a left-foot shot in the 30th minute and the game was even. At that point, Sociedad's control of possession was starting to mean something. They were knocking the ball around with confidence and creating problems.

The Penalty That Broke Sociedad's Spirit

Then came the moment that decided it. In first-half stoppage time, exactly at 45 plus two minutes, Álex Berenguer stepped up and converted a penalty for Athletic. It was the kind of goal that deflates an away side completely. You work your way back into a derby, you feel the momentum shifting, and then the referee points to the spot and that is that.

Iñaki Williams picked up a yellow card at 45 plus four for a foul, presumably in the aftermath of the penalty incident. He stayed on the pitch and stayed relevant. The card was a reminder that this was a proper derby, not a training ground exercise.

Athletic went in at half-time 2-1 up, and from that point, they defended their lead with everything they had.

Sociedad Lost Their Discipline

The second half told you a lot about both sets of players. Sociedad had the ball and the territory. They created chances. They had two big chances missed to Athletic's three. But they also fell apart mentally in a short spell around the hour mark.

Mikel Oyarzabal was booked for a foul in the 55th minute. Mamadou Sarr was carded for an argument in the 64th minute. Then Sociedad manager Pellegrino Matarazzo was also sent to the stands in the 65th minute for an argument. Jon Aramburu added a third yellow for Sociedad with a foul in the 74th minute. That is three outfield yellows and a touchline dismissal in under twenty minutes. That is not bad luck. That is a team losing its head.

Listen, when your manager is getting sent off in a derby and your players are collecting cards for arguing, your standards have dropped. You are not competing on the pitch anymore. You are reacting. There is a difference.

Athletic's Defensive Discipline Held

Athletic Club had 14 interceptions to Sociedad's eight. They made six dribbles work out of eighteen attempts, which is modest, but they stayed compact and made Sociedad work for every inch. Athletic's goalkeeper made four saves. Sociedad's keeper made one. That tells you where the real defensive work was happening.

Sociedad pumped 24 crosses into the box and only seven were accurate. Athletic put in 13 total with one accurate. The thing is, Athletic were not trying to dominate possession. They were trying to win. Those are not the same thing. They sat in, they intercepted, and they made Sociedad's 597 passes feel like they went nowhere.

The Substitutes Could Not Change It

Sociedad threw on Orri Óskarsson for Ander Barrenetxea in the 61st minute, then brought Takefusa Kubo and Beñat Turrientes on in the 75th minute to try and unlock Athletic. Héctor Fort and Job Ochieng came on late in the 88th and 89th minutes as Sociedad threw everything forward.

Athletic responded by bringing on Yeray Álvarez, J. Louis-Jean, and Oihan Sancet in the 89th minute to close the game out. They knew what they were doing. Protect the result. Get bodies in. End of.

Sociedad finished the match having been the dominant team statistically and losing the match. That is accountability in reverse. They had the tools. They did not use them decisively enough, and when things did not go their way, their discipline collapsed.

What This Means for Both Clubs

In their five completed La Liga matches before this game, Athletic had won one, drawn three and lost one. They were not in brilliant form coming in. But they raised their level for a derby. That speaks well of their attitude when it counts.

Sociedad, meanwhile, had won four of their five previous La Liga matches and came in looking sharp. They also carried injury problems into this game, with four players from their squad listed as out. Long-term absences and disrupted preparation do not help. But they are not excuses for a red card for the manager and three first-half hours of indiscipline.

Athletic won this because they competed harder at the moments that mattered. They scored when they had their chances. They held their shape when Sociedad pressed. They showed the right attitude in a derby environment. That is the basics done right. Every other discussion is noise.
