Avellino 3-1 Ascoli: Silipo Brace Seals Comeback Win in Serie B

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Ascoli got their goal. They got their moment. And then Avellino took the game off them completely. That is the short version. Here is the longer one.

How It Unfolded

Ascoli made the perfect start. Raffaele Russo put the home side ahead on 17 minutes, finishing with his right foot after a move involving Martin Palumbo. One goal, one shot that mattered, and Ascoli were in front. On 37 per cent possession, you take that and you make it count. The problem is they did not make it count. Not even close.

Avellino had already picked up a yellow card through Luca Di Maggio in the eleventh minute, and discipline was going to be a theme throughout the afternoon. But the visitors kept playing. They kept attacking. By half-time they had 63 per cent of the ball and were generating the kind of pressure that tells you the scoreline is not the full story.

Patrick Enrici made it worse for his own side four minutes into the second half. An own goal on 49 minutes levelled it at 1-1, and that was the moment this match changed. Ascoli had defended their lead for thirty-two minutes. They could not hold it for four minutes of the second half. That is not bad luck. That is an inability to manage a game when you are in front.

Ascoli's Defensive Frailty

The thing is, the numbers tell you everything you need to know about how this game was played. Avellino had 114 attacks to Ascoli's 64. Avellino had 49 dangerous attacks to Ascoli's 25. Avellino put 15 shots on goal to Ascoli's 12, and six of theirs were on target compared to three for the home side. Avellino also hit the woodwork once.

Ascoli's goalkeeper worked hard. Four saves is a decent afternoon's work. But you can only bail your defenders out for so long. Avellino crossed the ball 19 times. They created space, they recycled possession at 87 per cent accuracy, and they were the better team from the first whistle. Ascoli managed 78 per cent passing accuracy on 293 passes. Avellino completed 433 of 498. That is not a possession battle. That is one team controlling a football match and another team hanging on.

Listen, you can point to the early goal and say Ascoli were brave and direct. You can say they won 39 duels to Avellino's 35 and made 19 tackles. You can say they competed physically. And they did. But competing in duels and competing as a defensive unit are two different things. Ascoli conceded three goals. They did not keep Avellino out when it mattered. End of.

Discipline Cost Ascoli

Two yellow cards for Ascoli across the ninety minutes, and the manner of them matters. Luca Di Maggio was booked for a foul in the eleventh minute, and he was eventually substituted in the 68th minute, replaced by Dimitrios Sounas. Whether that substitution was tactical or precautionary, it disrupted whatever shape Ascoli were trying to maintain. Michele Besaggio then picked up a yellow in the 79th minute for arguing. Not a foul. An argument. That is unacceptable. You are chasing the game at that point. You cannot give the referee reasons to make your afternoon harder than it already is.

Avellino had their own discipline issues. Nicholas Rizzo was booked right on half-time, in the second minute of added time. Giovanni Corradini followed him into the book on 60 minutes and was immediately substituted, replaced by Gabriele Gori. Avellino made three substitutions in a matter of minutes around the hour mark, bringing on Gori, Giacomo De Pieri, and Andrea Oliveri. That kind of bold reshuffling mid-game tells you their management had a clear read on what was needed. They responded. Their players responded. The attitude was right.

Silipo Wins It

Andrea Silipo was the difference. Two goals from left-footed finishes, one on 72 minutes and one on 86 minutes, and the game was done. The first was assisted by Tommaso Milanese. The second came through Gabriele Gori, one of the men who had only just come off the bench. That is your substitutions working. That is your manager making the right call at the right time.

Ascoli threw bodies forward in the final ten minutes. Tommaso Biasci came on for Patrick Enrici, and Luca Pandolfi replaced Walid Cheddira. You are chasing two goals with ten minutes left and you are making attacking changes. Fair enough. But you should not be in that position if you hold your defensive shape and show basic accountability for the lead you built.

Avellino had five corners to Ascoli's one. They had 19 total crosses to Ascoli's nine. They were everywhere in the final third and Ascoli simply did not have the answers. By the time Silipo wrapped up the win in the 86th minute, the result was not a surprise. It was the natural conclusion of what we had been watching for ninety minutes.

The Verdict

Ascoli scored first, sat back, and got punished. That is not a mystery. That is not misfortune. That is what happens when you stop competing for the full ninety minutes and assume the job is done at 1-0. Avellino showed desire, standards, and the basics of a side that knows how to win a game of football. They had five wins from their last ten Serie B matches coming in, and they looked like a team that understands how to grind results out.

Ascoli had won two and lost one from their four most recent Serie B matches before this. They showed enough in the first half to suggest they can compete at this level. They showed nothing in the second half to suggest they can hold a lead when real pressure comes. That is the accountability question their manager needs to answer this week. Not with a laptop. With a hard conversation.

Avellino win 3-1. Fully deserved.
