Aitor Mañas Rescues Alaves With 89th-Minute Equaliser In 1-1 Draw Against Malaga

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Deportivo Alaves 1-1 Malaga. Friday night football in La Liga. Two teams low on form, low on confidence, and at times low on quality. What they served up was scrappy, tense, and ultimately settled by a late substitutes goal. If you wanted entertainment, fair enough. If you wanted a team to stand up and be counted for ninety minutes, you were left wanting.

The Goal That Gave Malaga Hope They Could Not Hold

Malaga took the lead in first-half stoppage time through Adrián Niño Heredia. A left-foot shot, assisted by Ramón Enríquez, and Alaves were behind at the break. The goal went through a VAR check immediately after but stood. That is the kind of moment that should galvanise a side. Get in at half-time with the lead, defend it, take your point or your win.

Malaga could not do it. That is the thing. They had the lead for the best part of forty minutes and still could not see the game out. In the 89th minute, Alaves substitute Aitor Mañas tucked away a left-foot shot and that was that. One each. If you cannot defend a lead against a side that had won zero of their last five La Liga matches, you have a serious problem with accountability in that dressing room.

Alaves: A Lot of Effort, Not Enough End Product. Until The Very End.

Alaves dominated large chunks of this match in terms of attacking intent. Eighteen total shots to Malaga's seven. Eighty dangerous attacks to twenty-six. Thirty-eight total crosses to seven. Ten accurate crosses to one. The Alaves wide play was relentless. Seven corners to Malaga's two. The woodwork was hit twice by Alaves. Twice.

Listen, you do not create that volume of chances against a side sitting on a lead and then claim you were not trying. The desire was there. The basics of getting into dangerous areas were there. What was missing was the composure and the execution. Six shots on target between the two sides and only two goals. That tells you everything about the quality of finishing on the night.

The Alaves manager threw everything at it from the bench. Hugo Novoa came on at half-time for Carles Aleñá. Then at the 55-minute mark, two more changes: Youssef Enríquez for Nicolás Valentini and Denis Suárez for Abde Rebbach. Toni Martínez replaced Mariano Díaz on the hour. And then Aitor Mañas came on for Antonio Blanco in the 75th minute. Mañas scored with his left foot in the 89th minute. That is what substitutes are for. That is what commitment to the cause looks like.

Two yellow cards for Alaves, though. Lucas Boyé for a foul in the 39th minute and Nahuel Tenaglia booked for an argument in the 67th minute. Tenaglia needs to be smarter than that. You are already under pressure. You do not hand momentum to the opposition with a booking for arguing. Unacceptable.

Malaga: The Standards Are Not There

The thing is, Malaga going into this had won none of their last five La Liga matches. Zero wins. Three defeats and two draws. Five matches, eleven goals conceded, five scored. They shipped five to Real Sociedad just five days before this. Five goals. And yet somehow they grabbed a lead here and had a genuine chance to take something meaningful from this fixture.

They threw it away. Clean sheets in none of their last five coming in, and they could not produce one tonight when it mattered most. When you have the lead with ten minutes left and your side has not kept a single clean sheet in five matches, you need your defenders to stand up and your players to compete for every ball. They did not do enough. End of.

Their stats tell the full story of a side that sat back and tried to absorb. Seven total shots. Twenty-six dangerous attacks. Two corners. One accurate cross from seven attempted. Malaga were not trying to win this game from the front. They were managing the lead. And they could not even manage that.

Carlos Dotor was booked for a foul in the 84th minute and then substituted off in the 87th for Jens Cajuste. Juan Funes picked up a yellow card in the 90th minute for an argument. So after conceding the equaliser, they lost their discipline completely. That tells you about the mentality. The moment things went wrong, the attitude collapsed.

The Numbers Behind A Frustrating Night

Possession was split fifty-fifty. Both teams completed over three hundred and sixty passes. Malaga actually won more duels on the night, sixty-two to fifty-two. They were competitive enough in the physical battle. But Alaves had thirteen key passes to Malaga's six. Alaves had eighty dangerous attacks to Malaga's twenty-six. You can win duels and still lose the game if you have no ambition going forward.

Alaves had six shots blocked. Six. That is a defence that threw bodies in front of everything. Their goalkeeper made two saves. Malaga's keeper made three. Neither side was outstanding between the sticks, but both did enough to keep it close.

The woodwork twice for Alaves. At some point your luck has to change. On this occasion it did, with Mañas converting in the dying minutes.

What Does A Point Actually Mean?

For Alaves, one draw in their last six La Liga matches is not good enough. The attacking stats here suggest they are creating opportunities. The problem is converting them. When you hit the woodwork twice and still need a 89th-minute goal to draw, you are not in good shape mentally as a group.

For Malaga, zero wins in their last five is a serious run. Their defensive record coming in was unacceptable, and they have done nothing here to fix it fundamentally. They nicked a lead and could not hold it. That is not a mentality built for competing at this level week in, week out.

A draw. Both sets of fans trudge home unhappy. That is the honest summary of a Friday night that neither side deserved to win.
