Al Riyadh 0-1 NEOM SC. Look at that scoreline and you'd think it was straightforward. It wasn't. Al Riyadh had 67 per cent of the ball, 12 total shots to NEOM's ten, and 110 attacks to 64. They dominated this match by almost every measure you can name. They lost it anyway. That is the story. And it is not a comfortable one for Al Riyadh.

The thing is, dominating possession and converting chances are two completely different skills. Al Riyadh showed plenty of the first and almost none of the second. But let's be honest. NEOM had already been reduced to difficulties. Bernard Mensah picked up a yellow card on 54 minutes, with a VAR card event also noted around the same time. Victor Lekhal had been booked for a foul in the 37th minute. Fahad Al-Jayzani, who had been carded in first-half stoppage time, did not even see the second half, replaced immediately by Hassan Al-Ali at the break. NEOM were ragged at times. Al Riyadh just could not punish them.

Al Riyadh's Standards Were Not Good Enough

I'm going to be straight about this. When you have that level of territorial advantage and you score zero goals, the accountability has to fall on the players in the final third. This is basics. You create the chance, you take the chance. Al Riyadh had one big chance created and missed one big chance. NEOM created one big chance and missed none. That is the game right there in two sentences.

Al Riyadh attempted 24 crosses and landed six accurately. That is a 25 per cent accuracy rate from wide areas. You cannot build a winning performance on that. They had ten key passes to NEOM's four. Ten key passes and zero goals. Somewhere between the pass and the finish, the desire to execute simply was not there.

The home side also come into this match carrying real baggage. In their last five Saudi Pro League matches before this game, Al Riyadh had won one, drawn two, and lost two. They had conceded twelve goals in that run. Twelve. Their clean sheet record across those five matches was just 20 per cent. They are a team that leaks, and a team that cannot find consistency. Today at least they kept a clean sheet. Cold comfort when you have lost.

NEOM's Situation Is Not Much Rosier

Listen, I am not going to pretend NEOM SC are in some sort of fine form either. Their last five Saudi Pro League matches before this fixture showed two wins, one draw, and two losses. They had lost to Al-Qadsiah just four days before this game, going down by two goals to nil. They arrive here and win. That is the contradiction of football. Form is a guide, not a guarantee. End of.

Across their last ten Saudi Pro League matches, NEOM had kept just one clean sheet in ten attempts, a rate of ten per cent. So the clean sheet here is genuinely significant for them. Their defence held when it needed to. Their goalkeeper made the saves that mattered. That is a team that competed when its back was against the wall.

The Discipline Problem Cannot Be Ignored

NEOM collected three yellow cards in this match. Three. Al Riyadh picked up one, through Haroune Camara in first-half stoppage time, a card that eventually led to his substitution in the 74th minute. But NEOM's disciplinary record over the 90 minutes was a problem that could easily have cost them. Lekhal, Al-Jayzani, and Mensah all saw yellow. Al-Jayzani's booking was so late in the first half that he could not continue, which tells you how chaotic those closing moments before the break were.

Three bookings and a forced half-time substitution, and yet NEOM held on for the three points. That tells you Al Riyadh's attack was not clinical enough to take advantage of a side that was scrambling at times.

What This Result Means Going Forward

For Al Riyadh, this is a damaging result at home. They had already shipped four goals to Al Nassr and four goals to Al Ettifaq in their most recent matches before this. The defensive record is poor. The offensive conversion is poor. That is a combination that makes life extremely difficult in any league.

For NEOM, a win away from home is a win. Three points are three points. They were messy, they were indisciplined, and they rode their luck in certain moments. But the attitude to defend, to stay compact, and to take their one clear opportunity when it arrived was exactly what was required. That is a mentality that you can build on.
