Toronto vs Charlotte Preview: Can the Crown Come Away From BMO Field?
Jay Thompson ·
Right, last updated 19 August 2026 and we are properly on the eve of this one now. Toronto vs Charlotte, MLS, Thursday morning for us UK lot at half past midnight. Yes I know. Set the alarm or stay up. Either way, let's talk football.
Where Both Clubs Are At Right Now
Look at the standings. Toronto are sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference. Nineteen games played, four wins, eight draws, seven losses. Twenty points. That is not a good return and the goal difference of minus seven tells you everything. They are leaking goals at a rate that would have most managers sweating through their training gear.
Charlotte are not exactly setting the world alight either. Fifth in the East on 28 points from 19 games. Eight wins, four draws, seven losses. But here is the thing. They are very much in the playoff picture and a win tonight would do wonders for their confidence and their position. These are two teams with completely different things at stake and that usually makes for an interesting watch.
The Form Book Does Not Flatter Toronto
Honestly, where do I start with Toronto at home? Their last five home games read WLDLD. One win, two losses, two draws. Sounds okay on paper until you notice that in those five home games they have conceded eleven goals and kept precisely zero clean sheets. None. Not one. The BTTS percentage at home over the last ten games is 100 percent. Every single home game has seen both sides score. Every one.
Over two and a half goals has landed in seven out of those last ten at home too. So if you were thinking of backing a quiet, tightly contested match tonight... mate, the numbers are screaming at you. This Toronto defence does not do clean sheets. It just does not.
Charlotte Are In Better Nick, But Away From Home Is the Problem
But away from home? That is where Charlotte have struggled all season. Last ten away games: two wins, one draw, five losses. They have conceded 16 on the road in those matches and kept a clean sheet just 12.5 percent of the time. So Charlotte away is not exactly a fortress-breaker either.
The contrast between Charlotte at home and Charlotte away is massive. At home in their last ten they have gone WDWWLDLWWD, five wins, three draws, two losses, scoring twenty and conceding eleven. A genuinely solid home record. But away? Proper struggle. That context matters a lot tonight.
Head to Head: Charlotte Already Won This One
There is only one previous meeting between these two sides and it happened back in May. Charlotte won it 3-1. Both teams scored, it went over two and a half goals, and Toronto were beaten at home. Small sample size, I know, only one game, but the story it tells lines up with everything else we are seeing. Charlotte can come to Toronto and score. Toronto will likely score too but conceding three is a worry.
What the Signals Are Telling Us
Honestly though... and I say this fully aware it contradicts the signal... Toronto at home have had BTTS land in every single home game over the last ten. Every one. The model sees the edge. I see a Toronto side that concedes for fun and a Charlotte side that does score even on the road. I am not convinced BTTS No is where I want to be despite the edge. I reckon both teams score tonight. Don't @ me.
Jay's Matchday Take
I'm going big on this. BTTS Yes. I know the signal says no. I know there is a five percent edge on BTTS No according to the model. But I have watched too many Toronto home games end with both sides on the scoresheet and I am not about to bet against 100 percent in ten games at home. Call it gut feel backed up by an absolutely relentless statistical pattern.
