Marseille Must Respond After Beşiktaş Humiliation as Sturm Graz Lie in Wait

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Thursday 22 October 2026. Sturm Graz host Marseille in the UEFA Europa League, and the thing is, this is not a game with equal stakes for both sides. One team needs a response. The other smells blood.

Marseille Are in Trouble and They Know It

A 1-4 defeat to Beşiktaş. That is the only Europa League evidence we have on Marseille so far, and it is damning. Four goals conceded. One scored. That is not a bad night. That is a capitulation. You do not get outscored 4-1 in European football because of bad luck. You get outscored 4-1 because your defence did not compete and your attitude was not right.

Listen, Marseille are a big club with big support and big expectations. None of that matters on a cold Thursday night in Austria if your players do not show the desire to defend as a unit. The Beşiktaş result has to be addressed, and it has to be addressed on the pitch. Words in a press conference mean nothing. End of.

They also carry injury concerns into this match. A major injury sustained in late August has had time to rule out a significant player, and with a suspension that was expected back around 12 October, there is a question mark over their available options in depth. Depleted squads need leaders. Whether Marseille have that in this squad right now is something I cannot tell you from one result, but that one result gives me no confidence.

Sturm Graz Are Quietly Doing the Basics Right

One Europa League match played. A 0-0 draw with Rennes at home. A clean sheet. Unbeaten. That is modest evidence, but it tells you something about their organisation and their defensive standards. They kept the ball out of their net. Against a decent Rennes side. That is not nothing.

Sturm Graz have their own injury problems. Four players are currently out, including two on long-term suspensions that run into January. Two moderate injuries and at least one more absence in recent weeks means their squad is being stretched. The thing is, a depleted home side in European football often finds something extra. Their crowd, their pitch, their structure. They do not need to be brilliant. They need to be solid and they need to compete.

That 0-0 suggests they can do exactly that.

What Has to Happen

Marseille need a performance that shows the Beşiktaş result was an aberration, not a pattern. That means starting sharp, defending with concentration, and showing some accountability when things go wrong. If they go behind early here, I have genuine concerns about whether they have the mentality to drag themselves back into it. That Beşiktaş result raised questions about character, not just quality.

Sturm Graz need to be exactly what they were against Rennes. Organised. Hard to beat. Difficult to play against. If they can keep it tight, the crowd will be with them, and Marseille's confidence is not exactly sky high right now.

This is a match where the basics decide everything. Shape, effort, desire, accountability for your position. Whoever brings more of that wins. Right now, based purely on what the evidence tells me, I know which side earned their result last time out and which side collapsed.

Sturm Graz to make life very uncomfortable for a Marseille side that has serious questions to answer. Under 2.5 goals appeals in a match between a side that cannot defend and a side that may not need to attack to get something here. That is my call.
