Can Lincoln Hold the Line? West Ham's Firepower Comes to Sincil Bank

Wednesday night football at Sincil Bank. Lincoln City against West Ham United. On paper, this looks like a mismatch. But football gets played on grass, not paper, and Lincoln have shown enough in recent weeks to suggest they will not simply roll over. That said, the evidence in front of me points in one direction, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

West Ham's Form is Serious

Let us deal with the obvious first. West Ham have won four and drawn one of their last five Championship matches. They have scored seventeen goals in those five games. Seventeen. West Ham beat Wrexham 6-0, beat Wolves 4-2, beat Derby 3-0, and beat Bolton Wanderers 3-2. The one blemish in that run was a 1-1 draw with Watford. That is a team in serious form.

The thing is, goals at that volume tell you something about attitude and desire, not just ability. West Ham are not grinding out 1-0 wins. They are turning up and imposing themselves. That is the kind of form you cannot fake. You either want it or you do not, and right now West Ham clearly want it.

Look back a touch further and the picture is only slightly more complicated. Across seven completed Championship matches, West Ham have four wins, two draws, and one loss. West Ham lost 2-1 to Charlton and drew 2-2 with Burnley before they found their rhythm. Since then, the level has been consistently high. Listen, one bad result followed by four straight wins is not a wobble. That is a team that sorted itself out. End of.

Lincoln's Defensive Record is the One Thing Worth Respecting

Lincoln lost 3-1 to Portsmouth and 2-1 to Middlesbrough in the earlier part of that window. The Portsmouth defeat in particular, conceding three, is a reminder that Lincoln's defensive solidity is not guaranteed. When the basics break down, they can be hurt.

The Gap in Quality is Real

I trust my eyes. West Ham are a former Premier League club with players who know how to compete at a high level. Lincoln are building, grinding, and doing their best in this division. That is not a criticism. That is just where both clubs are right now.

The thing is, desire and organisation can close a gap on any given night. Lincoln's 0-0 draw with Blackburn and their 1-0 wins over Preston and Bolton show they are capable of keeping things tight.
