I have looked at it twice. And the thing is, what stares back at you is not a tale of two teams building toward something. Whoever is organising this defence needs to look his back four in the eye on Thursday and demand more. Because what has been happening is unacceptable for a team at this level.

Portland Timbers: Plenty of Goals, Not Enough Wins

Portland Timbers arrive in Los Angeles in no better shape defensively, but with a slightly more interesting attacking story. Across five matches in the rolling sample, the Timbers have managed one win, two draws, and two losses. Ten goals scored, eleven conceded. Both teams have scored in every single one of those five matches. Every one. One hundred per cent BTTS across the sample.

Their most recent result was a 1-2 loss to Dallas. Before that, a 2-2 draw with St. Louis City. The win came against Minnesota United, 5-4. Five-four. I have no idea what is happening out there sometimes, but it is clearly not a match decided by defensive organisation.

Expand to ten matches and the Timbers look more competitive overall, four wins, three draws, three losses, twenty goals scored and eighteen conceded. That BTTS percentage remains one hundred per cent across all ten matches. Not a single clean sheet in the sample. Not one. Both teams have scored in every match Portland have featured in during this period.

The thing is, Portland can clearly hurt teams going forward. But they are leaving themselves wide open at the back. It is a lack of accountability from front to back. You cannot go gung-ho every week and expect results to follow. Desire to attack is not enough if you surrender goals every time the other team comes at you.

Head to Head: One Meeting, One Draw, One Pattern
