IFK Göteborg vs Elfsborg Preview: Third-Place Elfsborg Look to Exploit Göteborg's Defensive Fragility

Last updated 16 August 2026. When these two sides meet on Sunday 23 August, the gulf between them in the Allsvenskan table tells a story that the romantics among us might prefer to ignore, but the evidence is too consistent to dismiss. IFK Göteborg, one of Swedish football's most storied clubs, sit eleventh with a goal difference of minus thirteen, while Elfsborg occupy third place, seven points clear of their hosts and carrying a momentum that has been quietly building through the summer months. This is a fixture with history and weight, but form and circumstance point firmly in one direction.
Where Göteborg Find Themselves
What people do not understand is that the numbers which concern a defender are not always the ones that make the back pages. Göteborg have conceded thirty-five league goals in sixteen matches this season. That is not a defensive structure under pressure. That is a defensive structure that has, at various points, ceased to exist. In their last ten away fixtures, they have shipped twenty-four goals and kept precisely zero clean sheets, though this Sunday they have the considerable advantage of playing at home, where the picture is at least partially more encouraging.
At Gamla Ullevi over their last ten home matches, Göteborg have won three, drawn two and lost three, scoring eleven and conceding eleven. The symmetry of those figures captures the team's fundamental problem. They are not without quality in attack, generating nineteen shots per game at home with reasonable possession figures around fifty-two per cent. The craft is there in certain moments. The intelligence to protect a lead, or the defensive awareness to prevent a game from unravelling, has been far more elusive. Their recent home form string reads WWWLDLDL, which describes a team capable of bright passages but unable to sustain them.
There is also the matter of a long-term injury to a key player, with one member of the Göteborg squad having been absent since the first day of January with no expected return date confirmed. When a player disappears from a squad for the better part of a year, the shape of the team adjusts around that absence whether the coaching staff intend it to or not.
Elfsborg's Travelling Quality
Their away shot volume is also notable. Twenty-six shots per game across the last ten away matches is the output of a team that believes in pressing forward, that is not content to sit and absorb. What is interesting is that they achieve this typically with less than forty per cent possession, which tells you something about the directness and efficiency of their approach. You cannot coach the instinct to find the right moment to strike on the counter. You can create a system that invites it, and Elfsborg appear to have done exactly that.
In the only meeting between these two sides this season, back in April, Elfsborg won two goals to nil. A clean sheet on the road, no reply from the hosts. One match in the head-to-head record is a thin sample, but it is consistent with everything else the data suggests about the current balance of power between these clubs.
The Question of Goals
Both teams have a tendency to be involved in matches where both sides score. Göteborg's home BTTS rate sits at sixty-two and a half per cent over their last ten, while Elfsborg's away BTTS rate over the same period is also sixty-two and a half per cent. There is a reasonable expectation of goals at both ends, though Elfsborg's improving defensive numbers in their most recent fixtures complicate that picture slightly. In their last five overall games, only forty per cent of matches have seen both teams score. There is a version of this match where Elfsborg score and keep it tight, and that version is supported by recent evidence.
It is also worth noting that Elfsborg's away last-five over two and a half goals rate is only forty per cent, having dropped considerably from the fifty per cent seen over their last ten away outings. Goals may come, but the suggestion of a wide-open, end-to-end affair feels like an assumption the numbers do not fully support.
Injury Concerns and Team News
Elfsborg carry one significant concern of their own into this fixture, with a player sidelined by a major injury since May with no confirmed return date. The absence has been ongoing long enough that the squad will have adapted around it, but it remains a factor worth acknowledging. For Göteborg, the long-term absentee who has missed the entire season since January is, at this stage, simply part of the landscape rather than a fresh disruption.
The Bigger Picture
Göteborg's season has been a story of potential undermined by defensive vulnerability, and there is something quietly painful about watching a club of their tradition struggle to find coherence. In my time as a striker, you learned very quickly which defences you could exploit and which ones would make your afternoon difficult. Göteborg this season would not have made for a difficult afternoon. Elfsborg's forwards, arriving with confidence and momentum, will sense that.
The beautiful game does not always reward the beautiful team. But on this occasion, the team playing with greater structure, greater consistency and a clear sense of purpose happens to be the visitors. Elfsborg are the more complete side at this moment in the season, and the evidence is difficult to argue against.
Prediction
Elfsborg to win. A side third in the table, winning away from home with increasing regularity and fresh from a two-nil victory in the only previous meeting this season, should be favoured here. Göteborg's home ground provides some comfort, and they are capable of scoring, but their defensive record makes it very difficult to back them for three points. An Elfsborg win, with goals likely at the Göteborg end and possibly at both, feels like the most honest reading of what this match has to offer.
