Right. It is here. Friday night football in the 2. Bundesliga and we have got a proper interesting one. Holstein Kiel at home to FC St. Pauli, kick-off at 17:30 UK time, and I have been sitting on this preview all week watching the numbers shift. Now we are on match day and honestly... the picture has not changed much. If anything it has got clearer. And clearer is good for us.
The State of Play
Both clubs sit on one point from their opening game of the 2026/27 season. Kiel drew their first one, St. Pauli drew theirs. So on paper it looks even. Do not be fooled by that.
Look at the fixtures leading into this. Look at the form. These two teams are in very different places right now and the home advantage here matters more than usual.
Holstein Kiel: Solid at Home, Brilliant Away
Here is the thing about Kiel that jumped out at me when I actually sat down with the numbers. Their away form over the last ten games is genuinely impressive. Five wins, one draw, one loss. They are scoring freely on the road, 14 goals in seven away games, and the BTTS rate away from home is sitting at nearly 86 percent. Madness.
At home it is a different vibe. Two wins, two draws, three losses from their last ten home games. That sounds a bit worrying. But look at the last five at home specifically and it reads better. Two wins, two draws, one loss. And a clean sheet percentage of 80 percent in those five. So they are tightening up. The momentum slope is creeping upward at the Schleswig-Holstein Stadion and I reckon that matters on a Friday night when the crowd is right behind them from the off.
The model has Kiel at around 50 percent to win this. The market has them at roughly 41 percent implied. That is an edge of about 8 percent and you do not get those very often. You heard it here first.
FC St. Pauli: The Away Record is a Disaster
Honestly. I do not know how else to say this. St. Pauli away from home over the last ten games is one of the worst records I have seen going into a preview. Zero wins. Three draws. Seven losses. Seven goals scored. Nineteen conceded. Nineteen. On the road. In ten games.
Their overall form across their previous division in the same window is just as grim. No wins, three draws, seven losses, six goals for and twenty against. The clean sheet percentage away is ten percent. Ten.
Now before anyone says it, yes they are in a new league this season. The 2. Bundesliga is a fresh start. But form does not just evaporate overnight and the habits of a team that keeps leaking goals on the road do not disappear because the fixture list changes. St. Pauli carried those patterns with them and Kiel will fancy this.
Injury News: St. Pauli Stretched
This is where it gets a bit more serious for the visitors. St. Pauli are going into this match with four players confirmed out. Two moderate injuries picked up in late July. One major injury with a return date not until the end of December 2026. And one long-term absence that has been ongoing since March with no return date at all.
That is a significant chunk of their squad missing. We do not have confirmed lineups yet but four absentees heading into a tough away game is not ideal preparation. Kiel, by contrast, have no injury concerns flagged in the data at all. Fresh squad, home advantage, better recent form. This is starting to feel like a one-way street, mate.
What the Markets Are Saying
There is also an xG figure in the St. Pauli data and... look I always take the mick out of xG, that nerdy little number that tells you how many goals a team deserved to score based on some algorithm in a server farm somewhere... but even xG is telling a strange story here. Their home xG for was 7.41 against an xG against of only 2.96. Yet they conceded 16 and only scored 9 at home in that sample. When the actual goals are that far off what xG expects, either something weird is happening or the defence is just having a nightmare and the keeper is doing overtime. Either way it does not fill me with confidence for St. Pauli on the road.

Back to the drawing board if it goes wrong. It usually does. But tonight feels like one of those nights where the numbers actually line up. Kiel at home, St. Pauli falling apart on the road, four players missing for the visitors. Sometimes football is simple. Trust the process. Sort of.
