Colorado Rapids vs SJ Earthquakes: Can the Rapids Keep a Leaky Earthquake Side Quiet?

Colorado Rapids. SJ Earthquakes. Two teams who have given their own supporters plenty of reasons to be frustrated. This is not a glamour fixture. But there is a result in here, and I am going to find it.

Colorado Rapids: Tight at the Back, Toothless in Front

The thing is, Colorado have built something defensively over their last ten matches in MLS. Five clean sheets in ten. That is a real number. You do not get that by accident. You get that by working hard, staying organised, and having players who understand their defensive responsibilities.

The problem is the other end. Eight goals scored in those ten matches. That is not good enough. Colorado are not a team that will blow you away. They win ugly or they do not win at all.

Look at their last five. Colorado beat Real Salt Lake 1-0. They beat Los Angeles FC 1-0. That tells you everything about who they are. They are not a team that opens games up. They are a team that competes, keeps it tight, and takes whatever comes their way. I respect that. The basics matter.

But they also lost 0-3 to Columbus Crew and 0-3 to San Diego inside that same five-match window. So when the opposition has genuine quality and desire to attack, Colorado can be made to look very ordinary. That inconsistency is unacceptable at this level. End of.

SJ Earthquakes: Goals Are Flying In, and Not in a Good Way

Listen, I have seen some defensive records in my time, but SJ Earthquakes over their last ten MLS matches is something else. Twenty-two goals conceded. Twenty-two. In ten matches. That is a back line with no accountability. Nobody is taking responsibility. Nobody is doing the basics.

Five losses in those ten games. And it is not close losses either. The Earthquakes lost 1-5 to Minnesota United. They lost 0-4 to Orlando City. They lost 2-4 to Cincinnati. These are hammerings. That tells me there is a serious attitude problem in that dressing room, or a serious quality problem, or both.

Their clean sheet percentage across ten matches is ten per cent. One clean sheet in ten. Remarkable. And not in any way that deserves praise.

Their recent five-match form reads a win, two draws, and two losses, with nine goals conceded. The win was 3-2 against San Diego. They scored three and still nearly threw it away. That is who they are right now. Goals go in at both ends when the Earthquakes play. Both-teams-to-score has landed in sixty per cent of their last five. Seventy per cent across the last ten.

The thing is, the Earthquakes can score. Twelve goals in ten matches tells you there is something going on in attack. But if you are shipping twenty-two at the other end, those goals are worth nothing. Standards. They are non-negotiable.

What Decides This Match

Colorado at home, with their defensive structure, against a side that cannot keep a clean sheet and cannot stop leaking goals. I do not need a laptop to work out who holds the advantage here.

Colorado's home record in their last five shows two wins, one draw, and two losses. The losses were 0-3 and 0-3. Those hurt. But both of those were against sides that pressed them high and had real quality on the ball. SJ Earthquakes are not in that category right now. Not with the form they are carrying.

Colorado will set up to make it hard. They will be compact. They will be physical. They will not give the Earthquakes time or space. And against a side that has been conceding goals for fun, Colorado's 1-0 style of football starts to look very appealing.

Desire will be the key word on Sunday. Which group of players wants it more. Which group turns up ready to compete. On the evidence in front of me, Colorado look like the more motivated side. They are at home. They have a defensive foundation worth backing. The Earthquakes are travelling with confidence shredded after some ugly results.

Colorado Rapids to win and under 2.5 goals. That is my selection. One pick. No accumulator nonsense.

Colorado grind out results. Their goals-for column is modest but their defensive output is real. SJ Earthquakes have been leaking goals, but that has largely been in matches where they have faced teams of genuine quality. Colorado will not play open football. They will choke the life out of this game and nick it late.

The one thing that gives me pause is Colorado's own attacking limitations. They scored three goals in their last five matches. If the Earthquakes find a way to keep it tight early, Colorado can start to wobble. They have done it before. That 0-3 loss to Columbus and the 0-3 loss to San Diego prove they are not a finished article.

But I am not backing a team that has conceded twenty-two goals in ten matches to come to Colorado and defend well. That is not happening. The Rapids take this one. Tight, ugly, effective. That is what good teams do when they are not at their best.
