The thing is, a 20 per cent clean sheet rate over the last five tells you the defence is not the answer either. They are leaking goals and not scoring enough to compensate. Deportivo Alaves: Dangerous but Deeply Unreliable

Both of those defeats came from a position where Alaves should have had enough to compete. They did not. That is an attitude question as much as a tactical one.

There is a suspended player in the Alaves squad heading into this fixture. The data does not name the player but a suspension at this point in a run of form that has produced two defeats in five is not what you want. Somebody let the team down. That is unacceptable at any level.

A 40 per cent clean sheet rate over ten matches tells you Alaves can defend when they commit to it. But 60 per cent of matches in the last five saw both teams score. In a match where Celta are struggling to keep clean sheets and Alaves are inconsistent defensively, goals are not out of the question. Whether they are good goals or cheap goals is another matter.

Head to Head: Two Matches, Seven Goals Each Side, No Pattern

There have been two meetings between these clubs in the data. One win each. Four goals apiece. The last meeting finished with a seven-goal thriller. That is not a sample size that tells you much beyond the fact that when these two meet, things can get chaotic. Alaves arrive having lost two in a row but with a record over ten matches that suggests they are capable of winning here. They score goals. They have beaten teams better than Celta Vigo this term. If they show up with the right attitude they have every chance. If they turn up the way they did against Valencia and Racing Santander, Celta might nick a draw from somewhere.

The thing is, this match has low-scoring draw written all over it on paper. Celta cannot buy a win at home. Alaves go through patches where they cannot produce anything meaningful.
