Five Straight Defeats and a Leaky Defence: Can Gladbach Find Anything Against Paderborn?
SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·
Five losses. Seventeen goals conceded. Zero clean sheets. That is Borussia Mönchengladbach's recent Bundesliga record in black and white, and there is no dressing it up. The thing is, when you ship four goals to Elversberg and five to Freiburg, you do not have a tactical problem. You have an attitude problem. End of.
Gladbach's Form Is Unacceptable
Listen, five consecutive Bundesliga defeats is not a rough patch. It is a crisis. Mönchengladbach have lost all five of their completed matches in this window, conceding seventeen times and keeping zero clean sheets in the process. They lost 0-5 to SC Freiburg. They lost 3-4 to Elversberg. They lost 3-4 to FSV Mainz 05. More recently, Borussia Mönchengladbach lost 1-2 to 1. FC Köln and then 1-2 to 1899 Hoffenheim. The goals are going in at one end and leaking out the other.
The thing is, Gladbach are also carrying injury problems at the back end of their squad. Four players are currently listed as out, including one with a major injury dating back to August and three others with minor or moderate issues declared in October. When your defensive structure is already broken and your squad depth is compromised, you do not suddenly find steel. You find more of the same.
Paderborn Are No World-Beaters Either
Paderborn are not arriving here full of confidence. Across their last five Bundesliga matches they have won one, drawn one, and lost three. They have conceded nine goals and kept no clean sheets of their own. Paderborn lost 0-3 to Borussia Dortmund, lost 0-1 to SC Freiburg, then beat 1899 Hoffenheim 3-1. After that, Paderborn lost 0-2 to VfB Stuttgart before drawing 2-2 with Werder Bremen most recently.
That is a squad that will compete in patches and then switch off. They have the ability to score goals, as the Hoffenheim result showed. But they also have the ability to turn up and produce nothing, as Stuttgart and Freiburg demonstrated. Inconsistency is their calling card. Against a Gladbach side this low on confidence, though, inconsistency might just be enough.
Where the Bet Sits
Verdict
Gladbach need a result badly. Need and delivery are different things, and this squad has not demonstrated the basics required to turn form around overnight. Paderborn will not lie down. Back both teams to score and let the match sort itself out.
