Austin vs Philadelphia Union Preview: Two Struggling Sides Desperate for Points in MLS Basement Battle

Sophie Hargreaves ·

Right, so this one is updated as of mid-August 2026 and honestly... the more I look at this, the more I feel like we've got ourselves a proper six-pointer. Not in the sense that either of these sides is going to win the MLS Cup. More in the sense that both of them are in genuine bother and need something from this game. Austin sit 14th in the Western Conference. Philadelphia Union sit 14th in the Eastern Conference. Two lost souls, one football match. Let's get into it.

The State of Austin FC

Look, I'll be honest. Austin's away form this season is some of the most horrific reading I've come across in a long while. Zero wins, one draw, four losses in their last five on the road. They've shipped 14 goals away from home in that run. Fourteen. That's not a defensive record, mate, that's a tragedy.

But here's the thing. This is a home game. And at home, Austin are a different animal. Three wins from their last five at Q2 Stadium, nine goals scored, only five conceded. The momentum slope is pointing upward at home and that matters. When Austin are in front of their own fans, they're competitive. When they travel, they fall apart.

The bad news is they've got two major injuries to contend with. Both unnamed in our data but both confirmed out, both picked up back on 21 July with no expected return date. That's been a cloud hanging over this squad for a month now and it's clearly had an effect on their overall numbers. Overall in the last ten games they've won just three, lost six, and conceded 22. That goal difference of minus 14 in the league table tells its own story.

The numbers that matter at home though... 60% BTTS rate in the last five home games. Over 2.5 goals in 60% of those too. Austin are a team that invites pressure even when they're winning. They give you something to work with on nearly every market.

Philadelphia Union: Better Than Their Table Suggests? Maybe.

Philadelphia sit 14th in the Eastern Conference on 16 points from 18 games. That sounds grim. And away from home it absolutely is. One win, two draws, six losses in their last ten on the road. Zero clean sheets away. Zero. They've conceded 24 goals away in that ten-game stretch while scoring only 16.

I actually looked at the numbers for once and there's a strange thing going on with Philadelphia. Their xG for is sitting at 20 for the season against an xG against of only 13.7. For a 14th-placed team that is a genuinely bizarre split. It suggests they should be scoring more than they are and conceding less than they are. Whether you trust that stat or not... and look, xG is basically a bloke in a lab coat guessing... it does hint that they might be slightly unlucky on results this year.

Their BTTS rate away from home over the last ten? A staggering 88.89%. Nearly every single away game this season has seen both sides score. You're filing that away, aren't you. Good.

What the Standings Tell Us

Western Conference context here. Austin are 14th out of 15 teams on 17 points. They're four points behind 13th-placed side with games running out. This isn't a comfortable position. They need home wins and they need them now.

Philadelphia in the East are also 14th but on 16 points from 18 games. The Eastern Conference is slightly more compressed but they're in the bottom three and that's a dangerous place to be. Both managers will be looking at this fixture as winnable and absolutely must-win territory.

The Tactical Picture

Austin at home are more expansive. Nine goals in five home games tells you they're not setting up to sit deep and grind. They want to play. The problem is they leave space, which is why the BTTS rate is so high at home and why 60% of their home games have gone over 2.5 goals.

Philadelphia away are a chaotic watch. They score. They concede. They never keep clean sheets on the road. Their away defensive record is genuinely one of the worst in the league but they carry enough threat going forward to make noise in most games.

Put these two together in a situation where Austin need to win at home and Philadelphia never keep clean sheets away... and you've got a recipe for goals. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself while I fill in my acca slip.

Jay's Take and the Saturday Special

Right. Here's where we are. Austin at home are capable of getting this done. Their home form is genuinely decent relative to everything else going on with this club. Philadelphia away are the gift that keeps on giving for the goals markets.

My lean is Austin to win this. Home advantage, desperate for points, better home form, and facing a side that has won once away in their last ten. Don't @ me if it goes wrong. It probably will. That's football.

For the markets though, BTTS is the standout call here. Both sides have scored in nearly every game involving Philadelphia away. Austin at home score in nearly everything too. The 88.89% BTTS rate for Philadelphia on the road is not a number you ignore. That's about as close to a certainty as football gets, which means it'll end 1-0 obviously.

I'm going big on this... BTTS yes as my bankers leg for the weekend acca. Over 2.5 goals is the supporting act. If you want the full result, Austin to win and both teams to score at a combined correct score somewhere around 2-1 is where I'd be looking for value in the correct score market.

Look at the fixtures for both sides going forward and neither has an easy run. This game matters more than it looks on paper. Expect both managers to be animated on the touchline. Expect goals. And expect me to be reporting back next week explaining why it ended 0-0. Back to the drawing board, as always... but not yet. You heard it here first.
