Villarreal 2-0 Getafe: Buchanan and Romero Seal Dominant Home Win

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Villarreal 2-0 Getafe. Write it down. Because what happened at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Sunday evening was not close, not fortunate, and not complicated. Villarreal were better in every department that matters and they won the match. End of.

Total Control From the First Whistle

The stats tell you what anyone watching already knew. Villarreal had 72 per cent possession. They completed 488 passes at an accuracy rate of 86 per cent. Getafe managed 219 passes, completing 61 per cent of them. That is not a football match. That is one team competing and one team existing.

Villarreal registered 22 shots in total. Seven of those were on target. They created five big chances. Getafe had nine shots, one on target, and needed their goalkeeper to make five saves just to keep it at 2-0. The thing is, that scoreline is flattering to Getafe. Villarreal missed three big chances of their own. On another afternoon, this is four or five.

The dangerous attack count says it all as well. Villarreal produced 74 dangerous attacks to Getafe's 17. You cannot hide from numbers like that. Desire, work rate, attitude, standards. Villarreal had the lot. Getafe had very little.

Getafe's Discipline Was a Problem

Getafe committed 13 fouls in this match. Villarreal committed six. Getafe picked up two yellow cards, with Mario Martín booked for a foul in the 32nd minute and Nemanja Gudelj following him into the referee's book in the 62nd minute. The fouls tell you about a team that could not compete with the ball, so they kept stopping play without it. That is not a tactic. That is desperation.

Martín was hauled off at half-time and replaced by Ramón Terrats. Listen, when your manager cannot even give you 45 minutes before pulling you, that tells you everything about how the first half went for Getafe's midfield.

The Goals: Late but Inevitable

Villarreal's dominance did not produce goals until the final ten minutes, but that does not mean Getafe were hanging on by virtue of anything other than a combination of poor finishing from the home side and some desperate goalkeeping.

The breakthrough arrived in the 80th minute. Tajon Buchanan scored with a right-foot shot, with Nicolas Pépé picking up the assist. Pépé had only come on as a substitute in the 76th minute. He made an immediate impact. That is what you call desire. You come on with 14 minutes left in a 0-0 match and you contribute directly to the opening goal within four minutes. Accountability. Basics. Execution. Pépé delivered all three.

Then in the 90th minute, plus one, Carlos Romero added the second with another right-foot shot, this time assisted by Ayoze Pérez. Ayoze had come on himself as a substitute in the 63rd minute. Two substitutes combining for two goals in the closing stages of a match Villarreal had already won on the balance of play. That is a squad with depth and belief.

Villarreal 2-0 Getafe at the final whistle. Completely deserved.

Getafe's Cards and Chaos in the Final Quarter

Santi Comesaña came on for Getafe in the 64th minute and had a yellow card in his hands by the 67th. Three minutes on the pitch. Booked. That sums up Getafe's evening. Renato Veiga followed him into the book in the 76th minute. Two of Getafe's substitutes picking up yellows before the game is even decided. That is not professionalism. That is a team falling apart.

By the time Villarreal were making their own substitutions in the 81st minute, bringing on Iván Azón, Kiko Femenía, and Francho Serrano, the match was already done as a contest. Those substitutions were management, not desperation. There is a difference.

The Form Context

Villarreal came into this match having won two, drawn one, and lost two of their previous five La Liga matches. Their last result before this had been a narrow 0-1 defeat to Espanyol. A reaction was needed. They delivered one with authority.

Getafe, by contrast, arrived having conceded nine goals across their last five La Liga matches. That defensive record is unacceptable. They had shipped four to Athletic Club and three to Barcelona in that sample. Coming to Villarreal with that kind of defensive fragility and that kind of inability to compete in possession was always going to end one way.

The head-to-head between these sides showed one win apiece from two previous meetings. Villarreal put that right on Sunday. They controlled the game from the first minute to the last and their two-goal margin could easily have been more.

What This Tells You

Villarreal had injury concerns coming into this. Multiple players were listed as out with moderate injuries, with expected return dates falling around the time of this fixture. Despite that, they were utterly dominant. The thing is, when your attitude is right and your basics are correct, you do not need a full squad to beat a Getafe side that has no interest in competing with the ball.

Getafe managed one shot on target in 90 minutes. One. Their goalkeeper made five saves. That means Villarreal's attackers were not clinical enough, not that Getafe defended well. There is an enormous difference between those two things.

Villarreal's 9 corners to Getafe's 4, their 15 key passes to Getafe's 7, and their 5 big chances created to Getafe's 1. All of it points to the same conclusion. Villarreal were streets ahead and they got the three points they deserved.

Buchanan scored it. Romero sealed it. Pépé and Ayoze created them. Villarreal won it. That is the match. That is all you need to know.
