Barcelona created six big chances and converted five goals from ten shots on target. They hit the woodwork twice. They had 19 shots from inside the box. Valencia had three shots in total all match. Three. One goal kick for Barcelona the entire game. Thirteen for Valencia. That tells you everything about where the ball was living for ninety minutes.

Raphinha added a third five minutes into the second half. Left foot, clinical, assisted by Fermín López who was everywhere. At that point Valencia made three substitutions simultaneously at the 54-minute mark. Harvey Elliott came on, José Gayà came on, César Tárrega came on. Triple change. White flag in all but name.

Lamine Yamal: The Difference

Listen, there are players who make you sit up straighter when they get the ball. Lamine Yamal is one of them. He scored twice in this match, both with his left foot, both finished with the kind of composure that most players do not find in their careers let alone at his age. His second, at the 84-minute mark, was assisted by Dani Olmo who had come on as a substitute at 75 minutes and immediately changed the tempo again.

Pedri got in on the act at 79 minutes as well, finishing from a right-foot shot, also set up by Dani Olmo. Barcelona had substitutes who could come on and produce assists. That is the depth of a team at the very top of their game.

Lamine Yamal's first goal was subject to a VAR review. It stood. Correctly, it appears. The fact that it stood and was followed by four more goals makes the whole episode irrelevant, but it is worth noting that Barcelona did not let it affect them one bit. That is standards. That is mentality. That is what a team looks like when it has genuine belief and genuine quality.

Valencia: A Side Without Answers

The thing is, Valencia came into this with their last five La Liga matches reading: won, won, draw, lost, lost. The two wins were against Real Sociedad and Barcelona in May. They beaten this exact Barcelona side 3-1 in that meeting back in May. So the quality is there somewhere. Or it was. Because what turned up on Sunday was nothing like a team capable of beating anyone.

Two players out on injury from the Valencia squad, one with a moderate injury not expected back until May 2027, one with a major injury not back until November. Losing players hurts. But it does not explain being outshot 25 to 3. It does not explain 27 per cent possession. It does not explain a side that created one big chance all match and could not even muster a save from the Barcelona goalkeeper worth noting.

Three yellow cards for Valencia as well. Arnau Martínez booked late on for a foul. Their own players picking up bookings in a match they were being beaten five-nil in. What does that tell you about the mindset on the pitch?
