3-3 Madness at the Den: Union Saint-Gilloise and Bodø/Glimt Share Six-Goal Champions League Thriller
Jay Thompson ·
Right. Where do I even start with this one.
Union Saint-Gilloise 3-3 Bodø/Glimt. Champions League. Six goals. Five yellow cards for the home side. A penalty before the half hour. And a 90th-minute equaliser to cap it all off. Scenes. Absolute scenes.
If you are the kind of person who watches football for entertainment, you got your money's worth on Tuesday evening. If you are the kind of person who had Union on a home win accumulator... sorry mate. Back to the drawing board.
The First Half Was a Complete Riot
Bodø/Glimt got the party started on twenty minutes. Their man scored a straightforward field goal and the Norwegians looked comfortable. Then Union equalised almost immediately, pulling it back to 1-1 on twenty-five minutes, and honestly that should have been a signal for everyone to buckle up.
It was not calm for long. Union picked up a card on eighteen minutes, then another on twenty-seven, then another on thirty-two. Three yellows in the first half for the home side. Three. The discipline was all over the shop and Bodø/Glimt were making them pay for it. A penalty on twenty-nine minutes gave the away side the chance to retake the lead, and they converted it. 2-1 to the visitors.
Then, right on forty-five minutes, Union pulled it back again. 2-2 at the break. Two goals apiece, cards flying everywhere, and a home side somehow surviving despite seemingly trying their best to make life difficult for themselves. The half-time whistle was basically a mercy.
Bodø/Glimt went into the dressing room with a point to prove. Their manager threw two substitutions at it straight away, bringing on fresh legs right at the start of the second half. That tells you everything. They came here to win, not to park the bus.
The Second Half and That Mental Finish
The second half was a bit more contained, if you can call it that. Union made a triple substitution on fifty-six minutes, which is bold as anything at that stage of the game. Clearly their manager had seen enough of certain players. One of those substitutes, the lad who came on, ended up being the hero. More on that in a second.
For long stretches of the second half it felt like both sides were probing rather than going for the jugular. Union were still picking up cards, adding two more in the second period to finish the game with five yellows as a team. Genuinely remarkable that they ended the game with eleven men. Bodø/Glimt were calmer in possession, holding fifty-three percent of the ball, but they were not exactly creating a mountain of chances either. Only five shots total for the away side across the whole game. Five.
Then it all went mental in the final few minutes.
Eighty-eight minutes. The substitute who came on at fifty-six gets on the scoresheet. Union go 3-2 up. The Stade Joseph Marien is losing its mind. Two minutes to hold on. Two minutes between Union Saint-Gilloise and a famous Champions League opening night win.
They did not hold on.
Ninety minutes. Bodø/Glimt score. Three-three. The away side grab an equaliser right at the death and Union are left to wonder how on earth they let that slip. The scorer in the data is listed as a player who was already showing as a long-term injury... look, I am not going to pretend I fully understand that one. The data says what it says. Either way, it went in and Union were gutted.
What the Stats Actually Tell Us
Honestly I looked at the numbers for once and they are fascinating. Union had nine shots to Bodø/Glimt's five. They had sixty dangerous attacks to Bodø/Glimt's thirty-six. They had five corners, Bodø/Glimt had zero. The home side were not outplayed. Not even close.
But look at the saves column. Bodø/Glimt's keeper made two saves. Union's keeper made zero. Bodø/Glimt were cold and clinical when it mattered. Union were busy and hard-working but their finishing let them down at key moments.
That is the story of this game really. Union dominated large chunks, created more, ran more, attacked more. Bodø/Glimt were smart, disciplined, took their chances, and nicked a point at the very end. Annoying if you are a Union fan. Absolutely brilliant if you are from Bodø.
What It Means Going Forward
Look at the fixtures from here and this point probably matters more to Bodø/Glimt than Union. The standings show Union sitting in a difficult position in the Champions League table from last season, twenty-seventh out of the teams listed, and Bodø/Glimt themselves were not exactly flying either at twenty-third. Both sides needed something from this game.
Bodø/Glimt came into this on the back of five straight wins in all competitions and thirteen goals scored in that run. Zero conceded in those five games as well. That is the stat that jumps out. They conceded three tonight and still got a point. There is something in their DNA that makes them hard to kill off completely.
Union's home record is genuinely special. Eight wins from their last ten at home, twenty-five goals scored. They will feel this one. They dominated on their own patch and somehow ended up with a draw. The five yellow cards cost them. The discipline has to improve massively if they want to progress in this competition.
One thing is certain. If you missed this game, you missed a good one. Six goals, chaos, late drama, and two teams who clearly do not know how to play a boring match. You heard it here first, don't @ me, but both of these sides are going to be involved in some absolutely wild games before this Champions League campaign is done.
What a way to open the group stage. What a way.
