Sturm Graz 1-0 Marseille: Diakité Punishes Wasteful Visitors in Europa League Upset

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

The Bottom Line

Sturm Graz 1-0 Marseille. Thursday 22 October 2026. UEFA Europa League. And if you watched that and came away thinking Marseille deserved anything from it, I want to know what match you were watching.

Diakité scored in the 13th minute. A right-foot finish, assisted by Luca Weinhandl. That was the goal. That was the match. Sturm Graz defended it, competed for it, and earned every second of it. Marseille had the ball for 72% of the time and produced one shot on target. One. That tells you everything you need to know about desire and the ability to do something with what you have.

Diakité Sets the Tone Early

Oumar Diakité was the man at the centre of this. He scored in the 13th minute, assisted by Weinhandl, and that goal changed the shape of the entire evening. Sturm Graz got in front early and they knew what they had to do after that. Work. Compete. Hold the line. Basics.

Diakité picked up a yellow card in the 32nd minute for a foul and was substituted at half-time, replaced by Belmin Beganovic. You could argue that was the right call given the card situation. It was managed well. The job was already done by then in terms of the goal, and Beganovic came on and did not let the side down.

Marseille's Possession Was Worthless

Listen, 72% possession means nothing if you cannot score. Marseille had 676 passes to Sturm Graz's 273. They had 116 attacks to 97. They had 61 dangerous attacks to Sturm Graz's 39. They had 26 total crosses to 8. They had all of that and they put one shot on target. One. The goalkeeper made four saves for Marseille across the whole match. Sturm Graz's goalkeeper made one.

The thing is, you can move the ball around all night. You can dominate territory, win duels, pump crosses in. But if your big chances are being missed and your one shot on target does not go in, you lose. Marseille missed one big chance. They created one big chance. That is a catastrophic return for 72% of the ball over 90 minutes. Unacceptable. End of.

Angel Gomes picked up a yellow card for a foul in the 24th minute and was taken off at half-time, replaced by Himad Abdelli. Marseille also brought on Igor Paixão at the break in place of Neal Maupay. Two changes at half-time tells you their manager knew it was not working. He was right about that much.

Sturm Graz's Defensive Attitude

Sturm Graz came into this match having lost to Bournemouth 3-0 in their previous Europa League fixture and having drawn 0-0 with Rennes before that across their two completed matches in this competition. No goals scored in either. So the attack producing the winner tonight is already a step in the right direction.

Marseille came in having lost both of their last two Europa League matches. They lost to Olympiacos 1-0 and lost to Besiktas 4-1. A side that conceded five goals across those two completed matches coming here needing a result. And they could not get it.

Sturm Graz had significant injury and suspension problems coming into this. Eight players listed with fitness concerns or suspensions, two of those suspensions running until January 2027. Playing under those circumstances and winning 1-0 at home against Marseille is not nothing. It requires standards, organisation, and accountability from every man on the pitch.

The Card Count and the Fouls

Sturm Graz committed 23 fouls. Marseille committed 9. Three yellow cards each. Luca Weinhandl, the man who assisted the goal, picked up a yellow card in the 63rd minute. Arjan Malic was booked in the 84th minute. For Marseille, Gomes went in the first half, Amine Gouiri was booked in the 80th minute, and Bamo Meïté picked up a card in the 90th minute.

Twenty-three fouls from Sturm Graz is a lot. You do not want to give a team like Marseille that many set pieces. But their 88% pass accuracy in open play did not translate into goals, and neither did their 26 crosses or their 4 corners. So Sturm Graz got away with the foul count. Just about.

Marseille's Substitutions Changed Nothing

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg came on in the 65th minute for Geoffrey Kondogbia. CJ Egan-Riley replaced Nayef Aguerd at the same time. Timothy Weah came on in the 83rd minute. Five substitutions from Marseille in total. None of them changed the outcome. Sturm Graz made three, all routine, and saw the game out.

The thing is, making substitutions is not the same as having a plan. Marseille threw bodies at the problem without ever really solving the fundamental issue, which was that they could not turn possession into genuine threat. Their big chances created number was one. Sturm Graz created four big chances and missed three of them. Marseille missed their one. That difference, one goal versus zero, was the match.

What This Result Means

Sturm Graz got the three points. In the Europa League, at home, against a club with Marseille's resources, that is a result worth respecting. They were organised. They competed. They took their chance when it came and they defended it for 77 minutes with conviction.

Marseille have now lost all three of their last Europa League matches including this one, having conceded five goals in their two previous completed fixtures and now failing to score in this one. The attitude has to be questioned. You do not dominate a match for 72% of it and produce one shot on target by accident. That is a mentality problem as much as a tactical one.

Sturm Graz deserved this. Marseille did not. Sometimes it really is that simple.
