Right, here we go then. New season, same old PSV doing PSV things at the Philips Stadion. The Eredivisie is back and we are kicking things off with what looks on paper like a pretty straightforward home win. But there are some juicy angles in this one if you know where to look. Let me walk you through it.
PSV's recent home record is... well, it's goals, isn't it. Four wins and one loss in their last five at home, but look at the numbers behind that. Nineteen goals scored, nine conceded. Nineteen! Their BTTS rate at home is 100 per cent across those five games. Not once has this fixture at the Philips Stadion ended without both sides finding the net. Not once. That is a remarkable stat and it matters a lot when we get to the betting section.
Their overall last five is nearly as impressive. Four wins, one draw, zero losses, scoring 19 and conceding only 5. They are carrying 62 per cent possession on average and firing 17 shots per game. The momentum slope is flat at zero which just tells me they are consistently good rather than on some sort of purple patch. This is just PSV being PSV. They are the team in this tie.
Now look at Fortuna Sittard. Oh mate. Their away form over the last five reads W, L, L, L. Three losses on the road, one win, zero clean sheets, conceding 7 and only scoring 3. Their momentum slope away from home is minus 0.9. That is about as negative as it gets. The only direction that number goes is down. They are heading to Eindhoven with three players out injured, no clean sheet in any of their last ten games across all contexts, and a squad that is averaging only 10 shots per game overall with just 2 on target per game in their last five. Two. On target. Per game.
This is where it gets worse for Fortuna Sittard. They have got three players confirmed out. One is a major injury that has been ongoing since April. Two more are moderate injuries that started in early July and have no expected return dates listed. When you are already the weaker side in this fixture, missing players with no timeline for coming back is a real problem. We do not know exactly who they are but the data confirms they are unavailable and Sittard are stretched.
No injury concerns flagged for PSV in the data. Fresh squad, home comforts, roaring crowd. The vibes for the hosts are good.
Now I have to mention the model numbers because honestly they back up what the eye test suggests. Look, I'm not going to pretend I fully understand all this xG stuff. Marcus tries to explain it to me every week and I just nod along. But even I can see that PSV's xG for is running at 1.94 in their last five overall with 1.16 against. Fortuna's numbers are... interesting actually. Their xG for is 1.59 but their xG against is only 0.75 in the last five overall. I actually looked at the numbers for once and thought hang on, that does not match 9 goals conceded in 5 games. Which means they are conceding way more than they should based on the chances given up. That is a red flag, not a green one.
The market has PSV at 1.20 to win, which is almost a certainty price. Draw is 7.00. Fortuna Sittard to win is 10.00. No real value in the match result market for the home win, not at those prices.
I'm going big on this... but not where you might expect.
BTTS Yes at 1.57. Listen. PSV have had both teams score in 100 per cent of their home games. Fortuna have had BTTS land in 80 per cent of their last five games overall and 77.78 per cent across the last ten. Both sides have been involved in goals all season. Yes the model has it at 60 per cent probability and the market implies 64 per cent, so technically there is a slight edge against us there. But the raw form data is screaming that goals are coming at both ends. At 1.57 it is not a massive price but it fits perfectly into an acca leg.
Now, the model has flagged something interesting on Under 2.5 at 4.20. It reckons there is an 8.3 per cent edge there with a 32 per cent probability versus the market's 24 per cent. I respect the model. But I am also looking at the Asian total sitting at Over 4 goals for 1.92. The bookies themselves are expecting a high-scoring game here. PSV score goals for fun at home. Fortuna cannot keep a clean sheet to save their lives. Under 2.5 at 4.20 is tempting but I cannot bring myself to back it. You heard it here first, the goals are coming.
The correct score market is where you can have a punt if you fancy something silly. PSV win 3 plus goals feels right given that home exact goals market has 3 or more at just 1.53. That is the book telling you something. Home and Yes in the result and BTTS combined market is 2.10 and honestly that is probably the sharpest single bet on the card.
Right here are my picks from this game for the acca. BTTS Yes as a legs. Home and BTTS Yes double at 2.10 if you want a standalone. And for the madness seekers only, don't @ me, but PSV to win and over 3.5 goals in the match is an angle worth a small dabble given that home 3 plus exact goals line at 1.53 and the Asian line sitting at over 4 goals. This fixture has had goals flying in all season long.
Fortuna Sittard are going to come here, they are going to have a go because that is what lower sides do in the Eredivisie, they might even nick a goal. But PSV at home are a different animal and with three Sittard players already out injured and their away form in absolute tatters, this has home win with goals written all over it.
Back to the drawing board if I am wrong. But I reckon I am not wrong this time. You heard it here first.
