That is the sort of contribution that justifies squad depth. Kjaergaard came on and immediately affected the game. Credit where it is due.

But Nice had already found their second. Mohamed Amoura, who had picked up a yellow card for a foul at 57 minutes, responded in the best possible way. Ten minutes after that booking, he put the ball in the net with a left-foot shot assisted by Gauthier Hein. That is character. That is the attitude you want to see from a forward who could easily have gone into his shell after the card. He did not. Good on him.

Nice: A Win Built on Grit, Not Quality

Let us be honest about what we saw from Nice. Across the last five Ligue 1 matches before today they had not won once. Zero wins from five. One goal scored. That is not a bad run. That is a crisis of confidence and creativity rolled into one.

Today did not suddenly make Nice a good team. Their goalkeeper was making saves throughout, finishing with seven to his name. Nice needed their keeper busy. That is not a sign of a side in control. But they held on. Mohamed Abdelmonem picked up a yellow card inside five minutes, Xavier Mandza followed with another just before half-time, and Amoura added a third shortly into the second half. Three yellow cards is sloppy. Three yellow cards when you are clinging to a lead against a side as organised as Lille is unacceptable. The discipline needs addressing.

Nice also hit the woodwork once, which is the sort of detail that does not show up when you win but would have been agony in a draw. The fine margins all fell their way today. They will take it.

Lille: Dominant but Punished

Lille will be furious with themselves. They were the better side. They had eight shots on target to Nice's four. They created 17 key passes compared to nine from the home side. Their duels won count, 49 to Nice's 33, tells you they competed physically as well as technically. On any reasonable reading of this match, Lille deserved at minimum a draw.

But they conceded an own goal early and then took until the 79th minute to equalise. By then, Nice had already scored their second. Lille left themselves too much to do.

In the last five Ligue 1 matches before today, Lille had won three, drawn one and lost one. They had kept three clean sheets in that sample. This was a team in decent form. That is what makes the defeat more frustrating. The standards Lille had been setting for themselves were not matched today when it came to taking their chances. Eight shots on target and only one goal is not good enough. End of.

The substitutions Lille made at 64 minutes, bringing on Olivier Giroud, Kjaergaard and Osame Sahraoui simultaneously, showed ambition. And Ueda's goal came directly from that attacking intent. But the equaliser arrived too late, and the defensive lapse that allowed Amoura to score will haunt their manager tonight.

The Talking Points

Nice's yellow card count is a problem that will not go away. Three bookings in one match from a side already lacking confidence is a warning sign. One more in the wrong game and they are playing with ten men. Their manager needs to address that immediately.

For Lille, the lesson is about clinical finishing. Shots on target should produce more than one goal when you generate 21 attempts in a match. The crosses were flying in, 31 total with 13 accurate, but the final product was not there until it was too late. That is a technical failing and an attitude failing. When you are 1-0 down and creating chances, you have to take them. You cannot wait until the 79th minute.
