Middlesbrough vs Charlton: Can Boro Finally Shut the Door at the Riverside?

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Saturday 31 October. Middlesbrough host Charlton at the Riverside. On paper this looks straightforward. The thing is, this game is not on paper. It is on grass. And both of these sides have questions to answer.

Middlesbrough: Unbeaten But Unconvincing

Middlesbrough have not lost in their last five Championship matches. Two wins, three draws. Fine. But look at the goals against column. Eight goals conceded in those five games. That is unacceptable for a team that wants to be taken seriously in this division.

Boro beat Wolves one-nil. Good result. Controlled. Then they go and ship two against Stoke, two against Cardiff, two against Birmingham, two against Millwall. Every single opponent finds a way through. Their clean sheet rate across those five games is twenty percent. That is one clean sheet. One.

Listen, you cannot keep winning races with a puncture. The basics at the back have to improve or this unbeaten run means nothing. End of.

Charlton: No Wins, No Threat, No Excuses

Charlton have not won in their last five Championship outings. Zero wins. Three draws. Two defeats. They lost to Watford, losing that game two-nil, and they lost to Cardiff City, losing that one three-one. Those are not acceptable results for a side with ambitions in this league.

Their goals scored total across five matches sits at four. Four goals. That is a desire problem as much as a tactical one. I do not need a laptop to tell me that a team averaging less than a goal per game in the Championship is not competing hard enough in the final third.

The one positive for Charlton is their clean sheet against Portsmouth. A goalless draw. They can organise. But organising and competing are two different things, and right now they look like a side that will settle for not losing rather than going out to win.

Head to Head: Charlton's Recent Edge

There is only one meeting in the data. Charlton won it one-nil back in March. Charlton kept a clean sheet that day. Middlesbrough did not score.

That result matters because it tells you Charlton know how to set up and grind against this opponent. Whether they have the attitude to do it again on the road, against a side that has not lost in five, is a different question entirely. I suspect the answer is no. But I have been wrong before. I blamed the players, obviously.

The Key Battleground

Both teams like to concede, it seems. Middlesbrough's both-teams-to-score rate across their last five sits at eighty percent. Charlton's sits at sixty percent. Goals look likely. Clean sheets do not.

The thing is, Middlesbrough are at home. They have momentum. Charlton have not won in five and are shipping goals themselves, conceding eight across that same sample. This is a game Boro should be winning if they bring the right attitude from the first whistle.

Middlesbrough to win. Back it with conviction. One selection. That is enough.
