Phil Foden Hat-Trick Destroys AEK Athens as Manchester City Hit Five in Champions League Rout

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Manchester City 5-1 AEK Athens. Write it down. That is what happens when you cannot compete at this level. AEK arrived, had their half an hour of respectability, and then City turned the screw and that was that. End of.

Foden Does What Foden Does

Phil Foden scored three times in this match and every goal was earned. His first came on 34 minutes, a right-foot finish from an assist by Rico Henry Mark Lewis. His second arrived on 65 minutes, left foot, same provider. His third closed the show on 76 minutes, this time set up by substitute Ryan McAidoo. Three goals, three different moments in the match, same outcome every time. That is not luck. That is a player who knows where to be and has the desire to get there.

The thing is, Foden did not need to be spectacular. He just needed to be ruthless. He was. City created four big chances across the ninety minutes and converted them with minimal fuss. Seven shots on target. AEK managed three. The scoreline reflects exactly what happened on the pitch.

Early Control, Easy Goals

Elliot Anderson opened the scoring on 12 minutes with a left-foot shot, assisted by Enzo Fernandez. City were in front before AEK could settle. Rayan Cherki added a fourth goal on 57 minutes, assisted by Foden, and at that point the contest was dead and buried. City held 64 per cent of the ball across the match and completed 635 successful passes at a 93 per cent accuracy rate. AEK completed 346. That gap tells you everything about how the game was managed.

Listen, 127 attacks to 57. Thirteen shots inside the box to three. Those numbers do not happen by accident. City were relentless in their movement and their desire to keep pressing for more. That is the standard you need to set in this competition.

AEK's Consolation Changes Nothing

Stavros Pilios pulled one back for AEK Athens on 52 minutes with a left-foot shot assisted by substitute Zini, and to be fair, it was a decent finish. But let us be honest about what it was. It was a consolation. AEK made five substitutions and chased the game with their legs rather than their heads. They committed ten fouls to City's six. They hit zero accurate crosses from five attempts. You cannot go to the Etihad and expect to survive on effort alone when your basics are that far below the required level.

The thing is, AEK's four-match Champions League form coming into this showed two wins, one draw and one loss. They had kept three clean sheets in that sample of four matches and conceded only three goals. That defensive solidity meant nothing tonight. City found gaps at will and the Greek side had no answer once the second half began and City pushed the tempo further.

City's Form Concerns Forgotten, For Now

In their two completed Champions League matches before this one, Manchester City had beaten Porto 2-0 and lost to Paris Saint Germain 2-4. That defeat to PSG raised questions about their defensive shape and their ability to handle high-quality opposition. Those questions do not disappear after one big home win. But tonight was not about those questions. Tonight was about standards, and City met them.

Josko Gvardiol picked up a yellow card on 59 minutes for a foul and was withdrawn on 72 minutes, replaced by Vitor Reis. That decision showed good management. No point leaving him on the pitch with a card when the match is already won at four goals to one. City hit the woodwork twice as well. They were relentless even when the result was settled.

The Basics Won This Match

City completed three accurate crosses from thirteen attempts. They made ten interceptions to AEK's nine. They won nine tackles. None of those numbers are extraordinary. The thing is, you do not need extraordinary when your technical quality is this far above the opposition. You need accountability in your shape and desire to keep doing the simple things right for ninety minutes. City showed both.

Rico Henry Mark Lewis provided two assists, one for each of Foden's first two goals. Enzo Fernandez created Anderson's opener before being substituted on 72 minutes for Rayan Ait-Nouri. The contributions were spread across the team. That is what good sides do. They do not rely on one player to carry them. Everyone contributes to the basics and the goals come as a result.

AEK Have Nothing to Build On From This

AEK Athens won 22 tackles to City's nine. They had 39 duels won across the match compared to City's 34. In a different kind of game, that physicality might matter. Here it meant nothing. You can win duels all night and still lose 5-1 if you cannot create, cannot hold the ball, and cannot stop a player like Foden finding space in your defensive third. Their attitude was not the issue. Their quality was. And at this level, quality is non-negotiable.

Mijat Gacinovic, Milán Vitális and Oleksandr Zubkov all came on as substitutes for AEK in the second half. The game was gone by then. Fresh legs on a 5-1 scoreline is just damage limitation. There is no accountability to apply because the damage was already done in the first hour.

Verdict

Manchester City were dominant, professional and merciless when it mattered. Phil Foden was the standout with his hat-trick but this was a team performance built on controlling the basics from the first whistle. AEK competed for spells but never at the level required to threaten a result. The 5-1 scoreline is accurate. City move on. AEK go home and take a long look at whether they belong at this stage of the competition.
