Real Sociedad Hammer Málaga 5-2 as Oyarzabal Runs the Show

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Final score: Málaga 2, Real Sociedad 5. Write it down. Put it on the wall. That is what happens when a team that has not won in five La Liga matches invites a side in form and then forgets to defend.

The thing is, Málaga were not overrun from the start in terms of the numbers on the pitch. They had 56 dangerous attacks to Real Sociedad's 39. They won 48 duels to Real Sociedad's 30. They had 10 successful dribbles. On paper, they competed. On the scoreboard, they were torn apart. That tells you everything about the basics. You can win duels all afternoon and still concede five. Desire without execution is nothing. End of.

Kubo Sets the Tone Inside Three Minutes

Takefusa Kubo scored with a left foot shot in the third minute, assisted by Héctor Fort. Three minutes. Málaga had barely touched the ball. Real Sociedad came here with a job to do and they got after it immediately. That is the attitude of a team that knows what it wants.

Listen, when you concede in the third minute at home after a run of no wins in your last five La Liga matches, you need leaders on the pitch to drag your side back into it. Málaga had no answer. They sat back. They invited pressure. Real Sociedad were more than happy to oblige.

Orri Óskarsson doubled the lead with a right foot shot in the 26th minute to make it 2-0. At that point, the match was already decided as a contest. Málaga needed a miracle and what they got at half-time was a double substitution. Adam Aznou came on for José Salinas and Ramón Enríquez replaced Izan Merino. Two changes before the ball was kicked in the second half. That tells you the manager knew exactly how badly it was going.

Málaga Pulled One Back but the Defence Was Unacceptable

Adrián Niño Heredia gave Málaga a route back into it in the 54th minute, right foot, assisted by Pablo Martínez, to make it 2-1. Credit where it is due. They kept competing in that sense. But within five minutes, Mikel Oyarzabal restored the two-goal cushion with a left foot finish in the 59th minute, assisted by Kubo. That was the match over as a genuine contest.

Then Pablo Martínez scored for Málaga in the 66th minute to make it 3-2. Suddenly there was a flicker. Two goals in quick succession and you are thinking maybe, just maybe. Oyarzabal immediately killed it. He put his left foot through one again in the 67th minute, assisted by Jon Martín Vicente, to make it 4-2. One minute later, back to a two-goal lead. The accountability in that Málaga defence at that moment was nowhere to be found.

Gonçalo Guedes, who had come on as a substitute in the 61st minute, wrapped it up with a right foot shot in the 73rd minute. Five goals. Two yellow cards for Real Sociedad, one for Jon Martín Vicente in the 37th minute and one for Mamadou Sarr in the 62nd minute, and they still strolled to a 5-2 win. That is how dominant they were.

The Numbers Tell a Story Málaga Cannot Hide From

Real Sociedad finished with 55 per cent possession and completed 525 passes out of 589, an 89 per cent success rate. Málaga managed 86 per cent but with 477 passes in total. Real Sociedad had 21 shots to Málaga's 17, with nine on target compared to six. Real Sociedad also registered 13 interceptions to Málaga's seven and hit the woodwork once on top of the five goals.

The thing is, none of those numbers matter to me as much as the basics. Real Sociedad's goalkeeper made four saves. Málaga's goalkeeper also made four saves. The difference was that when Real Sociedad's attackers had big chances, they put them away. Málaga missed three big chances. Three. Against a side you need to beat, that is unacceptable.

Málaga's Form Is a Problem That Will Not Fix Itself

Across their last five La Liga matches coming into this game, Málaga had zero wins, three draws and two losses. They scored three goals and conceded six in that run. They had lost to Villarreal 3-1 and to Getafe 1-0. They drew with Espanyol 1-1 and with Celta Vigo 1-1. The Levante draw finished 0-0.

That is a side that cannot score and cannot keep a clean sheet consistently. In five matches they kept one clean sheet. Now they have shipped five at home. This is not a blip. This is a pattern. And patterns come from problems at the basics. Defending. Desire. Standards.

Real Sociedad, on the other hand, had won three of their last five La Liga matches coming in, with one draw and one loss. That defeat was a 3-0 loss to Atletico Madrid but they had won their previous three matches against Deportivo La Coruña 3-2, Valencia 3-2, and Elche 3-2. They know how to win tight matches and they know how to score goals. Kubo and Oyarzabal are the reason why.

Oyarzabal Was the Difference

Two goals. Both left foot. Both composed. Mikel Oyarzabal is a player who shows up when the game demands it. He had an assist too, setting up Guedes for the fifth. That is a complete forward performance. You do not need a laptop to see that. You just need to watch the match.

Kubo started it all with the third-minute opener and was lively throughout before being substituted in the 71st minute for Job Ochieng. He contributed an assist for Oyarzabal's second as well. Real Sociedad's attack had too much quality for a Málaga side that is low on confidence and short on ideas.

Málaga made five substitutions across the match, two at half-time and more to follow. When you are making that many changes before half-time, you are firefighting. You are not managing a game plan. You are trying to stop the bleeding. It did not work.

This result was not a surprise. The form said it was coming. Málaga need to look hard at their standards because right now those standards are nowhere near good enough for La Liga football.
