Arsenal Win at Anfield: Havertz Goal Enough as Liverpool Fail to Test Raya

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Arsenal came to Anfield and did what good sides do. They scored early, they defended their lead, and they left with three points. Liverpool had more of the ball in patches but never truly tested David Raya. The final score was Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal, and frankly, it was not flattering to the home side.

The Goal That Decided It

Kai Havertz put Arsenal ahead on 16 minutes with a left-foot shot, assisted by Declan Rice. That was it. One chance, one goal, one clean sheet. The thing is, that is what ruthless sides do. They take their moment and they make you chase the game. Liverpool never really managed it.

Arsenal finished the match with zero shots on target. Liverpool had three. Neither side created a mountain of clear opportunities, but Arsenal converted their big chance. Liverpool missed theirs. That is the difference between winning and losing. End of.

Liverpool Were Never Convincing

Liverpool had 44 per cent of possession and managed just 10 shots in total, only three of which were on target. Six of those shots came from inside the box, but Raya was barely troubled, making just one save all afternoon. That tells you all you need to know about the quality of what Liverpool produced in the final third.

Listen, 111 attacks from Arsenal compared to 86 from Liverpool at home is a damning number. The home side were being outatacked on their own patch. Their pressing was inconsistent. Their structure broke down too easily in the first half and Arsenal exploited it straight away.

Liverpool also went into this match with significant absentees. Two players are serving suspensions that run until January 2027. A further two players are out with moderate injuries, and one is not expected back until the end of December. That is a badly stretched squad. No excuses, but it is context worth noting.

Arsenal's Defensive Discipline

Arsenal were excellent without the ball. They made 10 interceptions to Liverpool's six. They won 58 duels, conceded only six goal kicks, and limited Liverpool to a passing accuracy of 73 per cent. Their defensive organisation was clear and deliberate.

They also put 33 crosses into the box compared to Liverpool's 10. They were the more aggressive side in terms of trying to create. Seven corners. Twelve key passes. Liverpool had ten key passes, which shows there was some creativity, but none of it was turned into anything meaningful at the critical moment.

Arsenal had nine shots blocked, which shows Liverpool did defend with effort at times. But that stat also tells you Arsenal kept coming. They kept pressing the issue. They had 14 shots from inside the box across the 90 minutes. Liverpool's defensive resilience deserves credit in parts. The clean sheet against them, however, is a damning reflection of what Liverpool offered going forward.

The Cards and the Needle

This was a feisty match. Both sides finished with four yellow cards each. Bradley Barcola was booked for Liverpool in first-half stoppage time. Noni Madueke picked up a card on 55 minutes. Milos Kerkez was booked on 67 minutes, and Alexis Mac Allister and Jurrien Timber were both cautioned on 80 minutes following an argument. Virgil van Dijk was booked deep into stoppage time, also for an argument. David Raya received a yellow card in the 90th minute for time wasting, which tells its own story about how Arsenal were seeing out the match.

Myles Lewis-Skelly was booked twice, at 55 and 72 minutes. That is a sending off. Arsenal were down to ten men for the final stretch of the game. Liverpool had numerical advantage and still could not force an equaliser. That is unacceptable for a home side. That is the story of the afternoon in one sentence.

The Substitutions

Liverpool made changes. Szoboszlai came off on 59 minutes with Trey Nyoni coming on. Gakpo was replaced by Rio Ngumoha on 67 minutes. Florian Wirtz, Ronald Araujo, and Milos Kerkez all made way in the 81st minute. Viktor Gyokeres came on for Havertz in the 84th minute, as did Piero Hincapie. Martin Odegaard was replaced by Mikel Merino on 88 minutes.

Arsenal brought on Bruno Guimaraes for Myles Lewis-Skelly after his second yellow on 62 minutes. Smart management. Get the extra body on, reorganise, hold the shape. They did exactly that.

Liverpool threw a lot at it in the final quarter but the cutting edge was simply not there. Gyokeres came on with six minutes plus stoppage time to find a goal but Arsenal held their line. Three points. Job done.

What This Means

Arsenal came into this match having won four of their last five Premier League matches, their only defeat in that run being a 3-0 loss to Brighton. They beat Everton 2-0 and Nottingham Forest 1-0 in their two most recent outings before this fixture, both clean sheets. They are a side that knows how to win ugly and win tight.

Liverpool won three of their last five before today, but their 0-3 defeat to Manchester City was a warning sign. They are a side that can be exposed when the opposition has desire and organisation. Arsenal had both today.

The head-to-head record across the two meetings on file shows Liverpool have won one and drawn one. Arsenal have now answered that with a victory. The average goals in those two prior meetings was 0.5 per game. Today produced one. Low-scoring, tight, attritional. That is what this fixture has been. No surprises there.

Liverpool need to look at themselves. When you are at home, with ten men against you for the final stretch of the match, and you still cannot score, that is a standards problem. That is an accountability problem. The basics were not good enough. End of.
