Right, let me be straight with you. If you watched this one and thought Başakşehir deserved more, you are absolutely correct. But that is football, isn't it. You can have 68 per cent of the ball, smash 24 shots at goal, and still walk off the pitch with just a point. The madness of this game never gets old.
İstanbul Başakşehir hosted Inter Turku in the UEFA Europa Conference League on a Wednesday evening and on paper this looked like a comfortable home win waiting to happen. The Turkish side were dominant. They really were. And yet here we are, talking about a 1-1 draw. Welcome to European football, lads.
Look, the first goal always matters in these two-legged ties, and Inter Turku got it. Sixteen minutes in, a right-foot shot finds the net and suddenly the Finnish side are ahead. That is the sort of start that changes how a match plays out. Başakşehir had to come from behind, and that changes everything about how you approach the rest of the game.
What is interesting though is that Inter Turku spent most of the match on the back foot after that. Only 32 per cent of the ball. Thirty-nine attacks to Başakşehir's 113. One solitary corner all game, compared to eight for the home side. They scored, parked up, and let Başakşehir try to break them down. Classic away day job. You have to give them credit for the execution even if it ultimately did not hold up.
Honestly, the stats for Başakşehir in this game are something else. Twenty-four total shots. Nine on target. Eight corners. Thirty-six crosses attempted. Ninety-one per cent pass accuracy from 551 passes. They were absolutely all over Inter Turku from the moment they went behind.
Here is the thing though. And I say this as someone who absolutely takes the mick out of the numbers merchants on a daily basis... even I can see that having four big chances missed is a problem. Başakşehir created four big chances and missed three of them. Inter Turku created three big chances and also missed three of them. So both sides were wasteful in front of goal, but Başakşehir's wastefulness hurt more because they were the ones who needed the winner.
They also hit the woodwork once. One of those games. You know the type. Twenty-four shots, a post rattled, eight corners, and you end up with one goal. Back to the drawing board on the finishing, lads.
Başakşehir pulled level on 54 minutes through a header, and that is a proper centre-forward goal that. Someone getting on the end of a cross to nod it home. The crossing stats tell you how they eventually got their reward too. Thirty-six crosses attempted, nine of them accurate. They kept putting balls into the box until one finally counted.
Interestingly there was a card issued right on half time, minute 46, to a Başakşehir player for a foul. That is never ideal. Going into the second half knowing you are chasing the game and one of your lot is on a booking adds a layer of pressure you do not need. The tactical disruption that followed made sense then, with Başakşehir making a double substitution at 61 minutes and then two more changes at 69 minutes, clearly trying to find something different in attack.
Right, let's talk about the Inter Turku keeper because he had a proper shift here. Eight saves. Eight. Başakşehir's keeper only had to make three saves all match. That tells you everything about where the pressure was and who was under siege for the majority of this game.
Inter Turku were hanging on. They knew it. Başakşehir knew it. Everyone in the ground knew it. The Finnish side were sitting deep, defending their lines, and relying on their goalkeeper and their defenders to keep Başakşehir at bay. That 8 to 3 saves split is not a slight on Başakşehir's keeper, it just shows how one-sided the second half especially became in terms of territory and pressure.
Inter Turku also picked up two yellow cards, one at 75 minutes and one right at the death on 90 minutes, which tells its own story about how desperate their defending became towards the end. Başakşehir were coming and Inter Turku were throwing bodies in the way. Literally.
One thing that jumped out at me when I actually looked at the numbers for once was the dribbling stats. Inter Turku attempted 18 dribbles and completed 10 of them. That is a 56 per cent success rate. Başakşehir attempted just 10 dribbles and only completed three, which is 30 per cent. So on the counter, when Inter Turku did get on the ball, they were actually carrying it with real intent and purpose. They were not just hoofing it away. Those 25 dangerous attacks from only 32 per cent possession tells you Inter Turku had a game plan and they nearly saw it through.
Look at the fixtures from here and Başakşehir will feel they should have done better on home soil. A 1-1 draw means the tie is very much alive, and Inter Turku will go back to Finland feeling like they have done something genuinely impressive. Their recent away form shows two draws in their last two away games, so they know how to keep things tight on the road.
For Başakşehir, the attacking output is there. Twenty-four shots in a single game is not a team that cannot create. But converting is a different matter entirely, and they will need to be sharper in front of goal if they want to go through. Four big chances and only one goal from them is not good enough at this level, mate. Simple as that.
Scenes on another night though. All the ingredients were there for a proper home win and instead we got a draw that keeps everything interesting. You heard it here first: the second leg is going to be a tasty watch. Don't @ me if it finishes 0-0.
