The thing is, when your team is doing that kind of work and still comes away without three points, you have to look at the basics. You have to ask whether your players took responsibility when it mattered. The answer, at least until the 85th minute, was yes. After that, it fell apart.

Varaždin were sharper in possession, completing 86 per cent of their passes against Gorica's 74 per cent. They put 26 crosses into the box compared to Gorica's eight. They won more duels, made more successful dribbles, and generated more dangerous attacks. On almost every measure that matters, they were the superior side.

A Match That Started Tight and Opened Up Late

The first half was goalless. Gorica were dealing with an early booking when Juraj Frigan picked up a yellow card for a foul in the 16th minute, which put them under additional pressure to stay disciplined. To their credit, they held the shape.

Ognjen Bakic came on. Fran Brodic replaced Patrik Mijic. Varaždin also reshaped, bringing on Valentin Akrap, Tomislav Duvnjak, and Emmanuel Uchegbu in the 63rd minute.

Akrap would prove the difference. After coming on as a substitute, he fired Varaždin ahead with a left foot shot in the 85th minute to make it 2-1. That should have been that. A team that had dominated the match, scored through a substitute, with five minutes plus stoppage time to hold.

They did not hold.

Cvijanovic and the Stoppage Time Equaliser

Ivan Cvijanovic, who had come on himself as a substitute in the 62nd minute, dragged Gorica level in the 90th minute with a left foot shot. Deep in stoppage time, with the match seemingly done, a team with one win in their previous ten 1. HNL matches found a way to stay in it.

Listen, Varaždin will look back at that and feel sick. You are winning with five minutes to go after completely bossing the match. You do not see that out. That is unacceptable from a team with their quality. Mario Marina had already been booked for time wasting in the 78th minute, which tells you something about the mindset in that final phase. You are trying to slow the game down rather than go and get a third goal. And then you concede anyway.

Gorica's Defensive Problems Remain

Before anyone starts celebrating this point for Gorica, let us be clear about what it actually means. In their previous five 1. HNL matches before this one, Gorica had taken one draw and four defeats. They had scored just two goals and conceded eight. They had kept one clean sheet in ten matches in the competition.

A draw against Varaždin, a side that had gone three wins from five in their previous five 1. HNL matches, is not a platform to build from. It is a fortunate outcome. Gorica's goalkeeper worked hard, making six saves, but his side were second best for most of the afternoon. The suspended player listed in their squad ahead of kick-off was presumably a further complication the manager had to navigate.

The thing is, Gorica did show something in the final minutes. Cvijanovic, a substitute, drove that equaliser. That is the kind of attitude you need to survive at this level. Whether it becomes a pattern or stays a one-off is what matters now.

Varaždin Must Learn From This

Varaždin came into this match with six wins from their previous ten 1. HNL matches. They had scored 17 goals in that same period. They are clearly a team capable of competing. But competitions like this do not reward performances. They reward points. And Varaždin dropped two they should have kept.

Twenty shots. Eight on target. Six saves from the opposing goalkeeper. You do all of that work and finish with a point. That is a failure of execution in the moments that counted. End of.
