Right, Belgian Pro League is back and we are kicking things off with a tasty one. Gent hosting Mechelen at the Ghelamco Arena. New season, fresh hope, all that jazz. Both sets of fans will be telling themselves this year is different. Let's have a proper look at what the data is actually saying, shall we?
Honestly, Gent have been a bit of a mixed bag. At home over their last ten in the Pro League, they have gone W2 D5 L2. Two wins from nine. That is... not great, is it. Five draws. Five. They are the draw merchants of Ghent. Their home form string reads DDLDDDWLW, which looks less like football results and more like someone falling asleep on a keyboard.
Goals have been tight at home too. Eight scored, eight conceded across those nine games. The over 2.5 goals rate at home is just 11%. Eleven! That is one game in nine going over the line. So whatever you reckon about this match being a goalfest, the Gent home record is screaming at you to pump the brakes.
Their away form in the same window is actually livelier, W3 D2 L4, with a 55% BTTS rate and 55% over 2.5 rate on the road. Make of that what you will. The momentum slope is slightly negative across both contexts though, -0.18 at home and -0.33 away. They are drifting a little, not collapsing, but drifting. They also come into this having had just one game recorded in the new competition window so far, a goalless draw away from home. Quiet start to the season.
On the injury front, Gent have two players out. One is a minor injury picked up on 28 July with no return date confirmed yet. The other is a long-term absence that started back in December 2025, with an expected return of October 2026. So whoever that is, they have been gone a while and won't be missed on the teamsheet now because the squad has clearly had to adapt without them.
Look. I am not going to sugarcoat this. Mechelen's away record is rough. Over their last ten away games in the Pro League, they have won one, drawn four, and lost five. Nine goals scored. Twenty-five conceded. Twenty-five. Away clean sheet percentage sitting at 10%. That means in nine out of ten away trips, they are conceding at least once.
And the last five away? Even worse. Zero wins, two draws, three losses. Four goals scored, fifteen conceded. The over 2.5 rate in those last five away games is 80%. So goals are happening in Mechelen away fixtures, just mostly going in against them.
Their overall last ten form string reads LDDLWLLLLL. Four L's to finish that sequence. Their momentum slope across all contexts is sitting at -0.5 over the last five overall. Heading in the wrong direction coming into a tricky away trip. They are sitting 16th in the early 2026 standings, bottom half, and you can see why from these numbers.
The one bit of good news for Mechelen? They have actually been decent at home recently, W4 D1 L5 over the last ten at home. But they are not at home on Sunday, are they.
The recent H2H between these two is a tiny sample but it is worth noting. Four meetings, one win each, two draws. Total goals across all four games... six. Average of 1.5 goals per game. Zero of those four games went over 2.5 goals. Not one. The last meeting in May 2026 went to Mechelen, so they have that to build on, but the general vibe of this fixture historically is tight and low-scoring.
Look at the fixtures. Low-scoring Gent at home, leaky Mechelen away, and a head-to-head that has never once produced more than two goals total. The data is telling a story here and the story is not a thriller.
Right, I actually looked at the numbers for once and they are genuinely interesting here. The model gives Gent a 49.3% chance of winning at home. Nearly a coin flip! Mechelen at 3.4 away is big for a team visiting a side who has only won two of their last nine at home. The draw is also out at 3.4 on bet365, same price as the away win. Interesting that.
The model has Under 2.5 goals at 52% probability, rated at 52 out of 100 confidence. Given everything we have seen from Gent's home record (11% over 2.5!) and the H2H history (zero over 2.5 in four games), I actually think the model might be underrating how likely a tight game this is. The Under 2.5 is available at 1.85 on Grosvenor. Not a million miles from fair value given the context.
On BTTS, the model has it at 50.3% but the market implies 57% at 1.75. The model is basically saying the market has priced BTTS slightly too high. Mechelen have scored in 70% of their away games over the last ten but have conceded in 90% of them. So Mechelen will probably concede. The question is whether Gent concede too, and with a 44% clean sheet rate at home, there is a real chance they keep it out.
This is an opener. New season energy on both sides. Gent are favourites and probably should be, they are at home and Mechelen's away record is genuinely dire. But Gent at home have been grinding out draws left right and centre. The head-to-head has never gone over 2.5. The away team leaks goals but rarely scores buckets of them.
I'm going big on this: Under 2.5 goals at 1.85. Every single strand of data is pointing that way. Gent's low-scoring home record, the H2H history, Mechelen being functional away rather than entertaining. The vibes are firmly under territory.
For the acca lads, Gent on Draw No Bet at 1.5 is probably the sensible pick if you want to be on the home side without the draw costing you. But honestly, the Under is the one I am properly backing here. Don't @ me if Mechelen roll up and bang in a hat-trick. Actually do @ me. I deserve it.
You heard it here first. 1-0 Gent or a 1-1 draw. Both fit the pattern. Both land the Under. Back to the drawing board if not... but I reckon we are onto something this week.
