Celtic vs Aberdeen Preview: Can Anyone Stop the Hoops Machine at Parkhead?

Jay Thompson ·

Last updated 18 August 2026. Right, we are two weeks out from this one and honestly the data is already telling us everything we need to know. Celtic vs Aberdeen, Wednesday 2 September 2026, 19:45 kick-off at Parkhead. And look, I am going to be straight with you from the jump. This is as lopsided a fixture on paper as you will see in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Celtic's Form: Genuinely Frightening

Where do you even start with Celtic right now? Look at the fixtures they have played and look at what they have done in them. Nine wins from nine at home in the last ten. Nine. From nine. They have scored 21 goals at home in that run and only let in four. That is not a football team, that is a problem for the rest of the league.

Overall in their last ten games across all competitions they have won nine and lost one. Twenty-three goals scored, ten conceded. The one defeat is basically a statistical anomaly at this point. Their last five overall? Five wins from five, 15 goals scored, five against. The vibes at Celtic Park right now are immaculate, mate.

They are sitting top of the Scottish Premiership table after two games. Six points, six goals scored, one conceded. Goal difference of plus five already. They are purring. The engine is running hot and Wednesday night is exactly the kind of game where a team in this kind of form just... does not stop.

They average 66 percent possession per game, 18 shots a match, nine corners. Honestly those numbers are what Connor would describe as "dominant" before listing seventeen caveats. I would just describe it as Celtic being Celtic when they are at their best.

Two long-term injuries in the Celtic squad worth knowing about. Neither has an imminent return date, one is not expected back until February 2027. When you are winning nine from ten you can absorb that. Celtic clearly can right now.

Aberdeen's Away Form: Oh Dear

Right. Aberdeen. Listen. I do not want to be brutal here but the numbers are the numbers and they are not pretty for the Dons heading into this one.

Away from home in their last five they have won zero, drawn one, lost four. Five goals scored on the road, thirteen conceded. They are only managing seven shots per game away from home and two on target. Two. Celtic are putting four on target from eighteen attempts per game. Do the maths on that one.

Their overall last five is two wins, three losses. Momentum slope is negative. Their last ten overall shows four wins and five losses. And they also have a long-term injury in their squad with no expected return date, which is never ideal when you are trying to put a consistent run together.

The one interesting wrinkle with Aberdeen is that at home they are actually decent. Four wins from their last five at Pittodrie, decent clean sheet percentage. But we are not playing at Pittodrie on Wednesday night, are we. We are going to Celtic Park and that is a completely different beast.

In the current table Aberdeen sit eighth, three points from two games but already with a negative goal difference. They are going to Parkhead to face the team with the best record in the division. You can see how this shapes up.

Goals Markets and What the Numbers Suggest

Now here is where I actually looked at the numbers for once and found myself nodding along like Marcus does when someone mentions regression to the mean or whatever.

Celtic's overall games have gone over 2.5 goals in 70 to 80 percent of their recent matches depending on the window you use. Their BTTS rate is sitting at 70 to 80 percent overall. Interesting bit though. At home specifically their BTTS rate drops to 44 percent over ten games. Why? Because Celtic keep clean sheets at home. Over 55 percent of their home games in the last ten have ended with a clean sheet for the Hoops.

Aberdeen on the road have not kept a single clean sheet in their last five away games. Zero. They have conceded thirteen in those five games. So you are looking at a Celtic clean sheet as genuinely likely, and a Celtic win with goals is almost certain based on what both sets of form data are telling us.

I will be honest. There is an argument the most likely outcome here is Celtic win to nil or Celtic win with a couple of goals and Aberdeen nicking one late when the game is already done. Celtic's over 2.5 rate at home is still 60 to 67 percent so goals are expected. Just might be mostly going one way.

And yes, I know what xG is. It stands for Expected Goals and the analytics lot love it more than they love their morning coffee. Celtic's xG for this season is 8.5 from two games. Aberdeen's is 3.7. Make of that what you will. I reckon a six year old could predict the direction of this one.

The Bigger Picture

Celtic top, Aberdeen eighth. The gap in quality and form between these two sides right now is significant. Celtic have that ruthless home record, a settled squad despite the injuries, and a confidence that comes from nine straight wins at Parkhead. Aberdeen have a horrific away record and are heading into the most hostile ground in Scottish football.

Look at the fixtures around this one too. It is September, it is a Wednesday night, it is under the lights at Parkhead. Celtic thrive in those moments. The atmosphere alone is a factor. Aberdeen are going to need something very special to get anything from this game.

Jay's Call

I'm going big on this. Celtic to win and over 2.5 goals in the game. The form absolutely screams it. Nine home wins on the bounce, Aberdeen not winning away in five attempts, goals flowing at both ends of Celtic's recent matches overall. Celtic win, goals galore, Parkhead bouncing on a Wednesday night.

You heard it here first. Celtic to win comfortably. Don't @ me if Aberdeen somehow nick a result because I will simply not be accepting it as real.

Back to the drawing board if it goes wrong. But it will not go wrong. Probably.
