Bristol City 0-5 Norwich: Ashton Gate Humiliation as Canaries Run Riot

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Right. Let us not dress this up. Bristol City were taken apart at Ashton Gate on Saturday morning and the scoreline, 5-0 to Norwich, tells you everything you need to know about where this club is right now. Standards have slipped. Accountability is nowhere to be seen. And the fans who turned up at 12:30 on a Saturday deserve a damn sight better than what they witnessed.

How It Unfolded

Paris Maghoma put Norwich ahead on 22 minutes with a right-foot finish, assisted by Sam Field. That was the moment Bristol City needed to respond. They did not. They went into half-time a goal down and came out in the second half to concede three times inside the opening sixteen minutes of the second period. Harry Darling headed home on 53 minutes. Andre Brooks made it three with a right-foot shot on 56. That was the game done. The contest was over before the hour mark.

Jovon Makama, on as a substitute, added a fourth on 70 minutes. A penalty, converted by Mathias Kvistgaarden on 80 minutes, completed the rout. Five goals. No reply. This is Bristol City at home in the Championship. That is unacceptable.

Bristol City Had No Answer

The thing is, the stats do not even tell the full story of how comfortable Norwich were. Norwich generated 52 dangerous attacks to Bristol City's 25. Norwich won 20 tackles to Bristol City's 14. Norwich completed 12 tackles won to Bristol City's 7. Norwich had eight corners to Bristol City's three.

Listen, Bristol City had 17 total shots and 7 on target. Those are not the numbers of a team that did not try to compete. They are the numbers of a team that competed without any real quality or organisation at the back. Norwich only needed 4 shots on target to score 4 of their 5 goals. That conversion rate is clinical. It is also a direct result of Bristol City's defence being wide open every time Norwich moved through the gears.

Bristol City had 3 big chances created and missed 3 of them. That is a team that cannot take care of business in either box. You want to know why you lose 5-0 at home? That is why.

Norwich Were Ruthless

To be fair to Norwich, and I mean that without any sarcasm this time, they were excellent. They came to Ashton Gate with a clear plan and executed it. Three wins from their last five Championship matches coming in, with 10 goals scored in that sample. The form was there. The desire was there. The attitude was there.

Four different Norwich players scored in this match. Maghoma, Darling, Brooks, Makama. Makama came off the bench and scored within minutes of arriving. That tells you everything about the squad depth and the confidence running through that side. Norwich also put out 23 total crosses to Bristol City's 13 and completed 6 accurate crosses to Bristol City's 3. They were dominant in every area that matters.

The head-to-head record between these two sides only goes back one meeting in the data, and Norwich won that too, 4-2. Same pattern. Different day. Bristol City have no answer to this Norwich side.

Bristol City's Form Is a Serious Problem

One win, one draw, and three losses in Bristol City's last five Championship matches before this game. 4 goals scored. 6 conceded in that sample. And then you add five more goals conceded today. The basics of defending are simply not being executed.

Bristol City lost to Wolves, lost to Sheffield United, lost to Blackburn in that recent run. The only win came against Bolton. And yet here they are, being torn apart at home by a Norwich side that itself has two defeats in its last five. This was not an invincible team that came to Ashton Gate. This was a decent Championship side. And Bristol City had no response.

The substitutions told their own story. Jed Wallace came on at the break. Dom Ballard and Tomi Horvat came on at 60 minutes for Bristol City along with Darlin Yongwa for Norwich. By that point, with the score already at 3-0, it was damage limitation. The damage was not limited.

No Excuses. No Mitigation.

Bristol City had 47 per cent possession. They had 455 passes and an 81 per cent pass completion rate. So they were on the ball. They were moving it. The attitude was not the problem in terms of effort on the ball. The problem was that every time Norwich pressed, every time they looked to hurt Bristol City in the final third, the home defence buckled.

Norwich had four players with moderate, major, or long-term injuries listed going into this match. They were not at full strength. And they still put five goals past the home side without reply. That is the context. No clean sheet from Bristol City in four of their last five Championship matches before today, and now this.

The manager will talk about character and moving forward. I am not interested in that. Results are what matter in this division. A 5-0 home defeat is a results-business disaster. Someone needs to look at that defensive unit and ask hard questions. Because right now, Bristol City are conceding goals far too easily and scoring too few to compensate.

The Signals Called It Right

I backed conviction. The conviction was correct. Norwich were the better side. End of.
