Bournemouth 2-0 Sunderland: Danso Red Card Kills the Contest Before It Began

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

The Red Card That Decided Everything

Let's start with the only thing that really matters. Kevin Danso, 17 minutes gone, professional foul, last man. Red card. End of.

The thing is, once that happens, you are not analysing a football match anymore. You are watching a training exercise. Bournemouth had 65 per cent possession, 29 shots to Sunderland's three, and 18 key passes to Sunderland's two. Those numbers do not flatter the home side. They reflect exactly what happens when you play against ten men for over seventy minutes in your own stadium.

Sunderland came here already carrying problems. Three defeats in their last five Premier League matches before kick-off. They conceded ten goals across those five games. Coming to the Vitality a goal down in terms of mentality before Danso made it considerably worse by taking the man and handing Bournemouth the keys to the afternoon.

Tavernier Sets the Tone Early

Marcus Tavernier headed Bournemouth in front in the sixth minute, assisted by Evanilson. A header from six minutes in. That tells you everything about Sunderland's start. They had not organised themselves, they were not compact, and they paid for it immediately.

The thing is, Bournemouth needed that early goal. Their own form coming into this was nothing to celebrate. No wins in their last five Premier League matches. Three draws, two defeats. They shipped eleven goals in that same sample. A clean sheet today was almost as important as the three points.

Listen, you do not fix a defensive problem in one afternoon. But you can get the right result when the opposition hands you an opportunity. Bournemouth were ruthless enough to take it.

Evanilson Finishes the Job

The second goal came three minutes into the second half. Evanilson, who had assisted the opener, put the result beyond any doubt with a left-foot shot in the 48th minute. Two goals, two different contributors, and both involving Evanilson. He had a proper afternoon's work before being replaced by Álvaro Rodríguez in the 79th minute.

Sunderland's goalkeeper made four saves. The home side had six shots on target. The scoreline could have been heavier. Bournemouth missed four big chances across the ninety minutes. Against eleven men, that would be punished. Against ten, it did not matter.

Sunderland Were a Shambles

Zero shots on target. Three shots total. Two of those from outside the box. Sunderland created one big chance across the entire match and missed it. One. That is not a team that came here to compete. That is a team that came here and then lost a man and accepted their fate.

Their pass accuracy sat at 63 per cent. They completed 190 successful passes to Bournemouth's 475. Those are the basics. You cannot build anything in a match when you cannot keep the ball. And you certainly cannot defend when you are chasing shadows with ten players for the best part of an hour and a half.

Chris Rigg picked up a yellow card in the 65th minute and was substituted off at the same time. Omar Alderete received a booking in the 40th minute and was hauled off at half-time. That is poor discipline from a side already fighting with a man disadvantage. Unacceptable. Sunderland's attitude in this match, after the red card, was that of a team that had already given up.

Bournemouth's Discipline Was Not Clean Either

To be fair to Bournemouth, they were not without fault. Three yellow cards of their own. António Silva booked in the 26th minute. Lewis Cook booked deep into first-half stoppage time. Ryan Christie carded in the 79th minute. That is sloppy when you are winning comfortably against ten men. You do not need to foul people when you are in total control.

The thing is, standards do not drop because you are winning. Cook was replaced by Justin Kluivert in the 62nd minute anyway, but that stoppage-time booking before half-time was needless. Accountability cuts both ways.

What This Result Actually Means

Bournemouth get their first win of this five-match Premier League sample. They keep a clean sheet for the first time in the same window. Their goalkeeper did not make a single save. That is the simplest way to describe how little Sunderland threatened.

The 29 shots Bournemouth registered is a significant number. The six big chances created is a significant number. But converting only two of those six big chances, and missing four of them, is something their manager will not ignore. You take three points today. Next week, against a full side, those misses cost you.

Sunderland arrived with one win from their last five Premier League matches and leave with none from their last four. They have conceded twelve goals across four completed away matches in this rolling sample. Their only clean sheet in five Premier League games came in that single win. The problems here are deep and they were not helped by their own recklessness in the opening twenty minutes.

The Verdict

Bournemouth did what any competent top-flight side does. They scored early, kept their shape, and made the game comfortable. Tavernier and Evanilson gave them exactly what they needed from their forwards. The clean sheet was the real bonus given how many goals they had been leaking.

Sunderland were poor before Danso went. After Danso went, they were a team playing for the final whistle. That is not desire. That is not competing. That is a side with attitude problems that a scoreline of 2-0 does not even begin to describe.

Bournemouth win. Sunderland deserve nothing. End of.
