Bournemouth's Draw Addiction Meets Sunderland's Inconsistency: Who Blinks First at the Vitality?

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Sunday 18 October 2026. Bournemouth host Sunderland at the Vitality Stadium. Kick-off is at 14:00 UK time. On paper it looks like a match that could go either way. On the evidence available, it looks like a match that could end 1-1 and leave everyone annoyed. That is not a prediction. That is just what the numbers keep saying about both of these sides right now.

Bournemouth: Four Draws and a Problem

Listen, I have seen teams in bad form. I have seen teams with no confidence, no identity, no clue. Bournemouth are not that. They are something more frustrating. They are a side that keeps getting into games, keeps scoring goals, and keeps failing to win them. In their last five Premier League matches, Bournemouth have drawn four and lost one. Zero wins. Zero clean sheets. Both teams scored in every single one of those five games.

The thing is, draws are not always a crisis. But four in a row at home tells you something about the mentality in that dressing room. You are not seeing teams off. You are letting games drift. You are giving up goals you should not be giving up. That is an accountability issue. End of.

Zoom out to the last ten Premier League matches and Bournemouth show three wins, six draws and one defeat. Sixteen goals scored, twelve conceded. They can clearly score. They clearly cannot keep the ball out of their net consistently, with a clean sheet in only two of those ten games. The wins in that run came against Fulham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United. Those are results that show there is quality in this squad. The problem is the consistency of standards from one week to the next.

Bournemouth lost to Manchester City in that recent run, going down 2-1. Nobody panics about losing to City. But you do look at the manner of the draws. Drawing 2-2 with Brentford. Drawing 2-2 with Newcastle. Drawing 1-1 with Everton. Drawing 1-1 with Nottingham Forest. These are not results against elite opposition where you take the point and move on. These are games where winning was entirely possible and it did not happen. That has to change.

There is also a major injury concern for the home side. A player carrying a major injury has been out since late July with no expected return date. That kind of long-term absence disrupts planning and depth. It matters.

Sunderland: Capable of Beating Anyone, Capable of Anything Else

Sunderland are a newly promoted side making their way in the Premier League, and you have to respect the fact that they are here. But respect only goes so far. You still have to compete every single week. The basics do not change just because you are new to the division.

Their last five Premier League matches read: loss, draw, win, loss, win. Two wins, one draw, two defeats. Five goals scored, six conceded. It is a mixed picture. The win against Fulham, where Sunderland kept a clean sheet and won 1-0, showed they can be disciplined and hard to break down. The win against Chelsea, where Sunderland won 2-1, showed they have the desire to go to big clubs and compete. That is admirable.

But then you look at the other side of the ledger. Sunderland lost 0-2 to Arsenal. They lost 1-2 to Ipswich. And if you go back further in the ten-match window, Sunderland were on the wrong end of a 0-5 defeat to Nottingham Forest and a 3-4 loss at Aston Villa, where they shipped four goals despite scoring three themselves. That is the kind of defensive fragility that will cost you in this division. You cannot be leaking goals like that and expect to be safe. Standards have to be higher.

Sunderland also have two players unavailable through injury. One is a long-term absence with no return date. A second player was expected back around 16 October but had not recovered in time as of the last update. Their squad resources are being tested.

Head to Head: Small Sample, Clear Pattern

The thing is, that small sample lines up perfectly with everything else we know about how both teams play right now. Goals happen. Defences wobble. Clean sheets are rare.

The Bet

I do not do accumulators. I find one thing I believe in and I back it. Here it is plainly. Bournemouth have zero clean sheets in their last five Premier League matches. Sunderland have scored in four of their last five. Both teams to score in this game is not a gamble. It is reading the evidence in front of you. Both teams have scored in every one of the two previous meetings between these sides. Back both teams to score. That is the selection. One bet. Conviction.

Verdict

Bournemouth need three points badly. Four draws in a row is not good enough and the players in that dressing room know it. The attitude has to be different on Sunday. Sunderland will not make it easy. They have beaten Chelsea away from home this season and they have shown they can compete against quality opposition. But they have also been hammered 0-5 and they have defensive problems that have not been fixed.

My read is a Bournemouth win, narrow, probably 2-1. But I would not bet on the result here. The draw keeps following Bournemouth around like a bad habit. Back the goals. That is where the certainty is.
