Bolton Must Find Their Backbone as Middlesbrough Arrive Unbeaten

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Friday night football under the lights. One team coming in with confidence. The other coming in with questions. Bolton versus Middlesbrough is not the most glamorous fixture the Championship has to offer, but it tells you something real about where both clubs are right now. And what it tells you about Bolton is not comfortable reading.

Bolton's Defensive Standards Are Unacceptable

Let us start with the basics. Bolton have shipped thirteen goals in five Championship matches. Thirteen. They have kept one clean sheet in that same sample. That is not a defensive crisis waiting to happen. That is a defensive crisis that has already happened.

The thing is, you can live with a bad result here and there. The 1-0 win over Cardiff City showed they can grind something out when they need to. But then Bolton went and let in four against Millwall. Four. And then they conceded three against Sheffield United, and three more against West Ham United. That is ten goals in three matches. The basics are not being executed. Someone in that dressing room needs to take accountability for what is happening at the back, end of.

The 4-3 win over Norwich looks nice on paper. Bolton scored four goals and still nearly gave it away. That result tells you more about the chaos in this side than the three points suggest. When you are winning 4-3, something has gone wrong as well as right.

Middlesbrough Are Unbeaten and Quietly Dangerous

Middlesbrough have not lost in five Championship matches. Two wins, three draws. Unbeaten. They are not blowing teams away, but they are not losing. There is a desire and a solidity to their results that Bolton simply cannot match right now.

Middlesbrough beat Norwich 4-3, the same Norwich that Bolton also beat 4-3. Listen, you cannot read too much into that. But it does suggest Middlesbrough know how to score goals and they are not afraid to compete in open games. They have found the net ten times across their five-match sample. They conceded eight. Both teams to score has landed in four of Middlesbrough's last five. That is the pattern you are looking at here.

Their most recent result was a 2-2 draw with Birmingham. They have drawn three of their last five. Some people would call that inconsistency. I call it a team that does not panic and does not lose. In a division like this, that counts for something.

The Bet

I do not want Bolton's clean sheet. They have kept one in five and have conceded thirteen goals in that sample. Their own supporters would not back them to keep a clean sheet right now. Middlesbrough have scored in four of their last five matches and carry a real attacking threat.

Both teams to score has come in across sixty percent of Bolton's recent home matches and eighty percent of Middlesbrough's away matches. The numbers are pointing in one direction. So are my eyes. Bolton will score because they have the attacking output to hurt teams. Middlesbrough will score because Bolton cannot stop anyone at the moment.

Both teams to score. Back it. Move on.

Bolton need to show some desire and sort their defensive attitude out before they get into serious trouble. Friday night is another chance. The thing is, chances mean nothing unless you take them. Middlesbrough will be waiting to expose exactly the same weaknesses that Millwall, Sheffield United, and West Ham already found.
