The Result

Arouca 1-2 Santa Clara. Simple as that. Santa Clara came to the Estádio Municipal de Arouca, did their damage in the first half, and got out with the three points. That is what a side with desire looks like. They had 36 per cent possession. They did not care. They competed when it mattered and Arouca did not. End of.

First Half: Santa Clara Take Control

The opening goal arrived on 22 minutes. Gonçalo Paciência finished from a right-foot shot, assisted by Djé. Clean execution. The thing is, Arouca had done nothing to stop it coming. They were loose in the first half. Santa Clara punished them immediately.

Then, at minute 23, Arouca were forced into a substitution. Mateo Flores came off, Pablo Gozálbez came on. At 1-0 down and less than 25 minutes played, that is not a good sign. Whether it was injury or tactical, it disrupted whatever Arouca were trying to do. They never recovered their shape.

On 33 minutes, Santa Clara's Emanuel Moreira picked up a yellow card for a foul. It barely slowed them down. Three minutes later, Djé turned from provider to scorer. Left foot, clinical finish, assisted by Pedro Pacheco. 2-0. Arouca were done as a contest before the break. Their standards in those 40 minutes were unacceptable for a home side.

On paper, the second half was theirs to control. The basics of converting that into goals, though, let them down completely.

At minute 54, Naïs Djouahra received a yellow card for a foul. The same player was then replaced at 68 minutes, with Gabriel Rukavina coming on. Espen van Ee also made way for Pedro Santos in the same double change. Arouca were throwing bodies forward. Santa Clara were managing the game.

The flashpoint of the second half came on 65 minutes. Three yellow cards in the same minute, all for arguing. Arouca's manager Vasco Seabra was booked. So was Arouca's Espen van Ee and Santa Clara's Tiago Ribeiro. A collective loss of composure at a moment when Arouca needed calm heads and clear thinking. That lack of accountability on the touchline does not help your players when they need leadership most.

Santa Clara's discipline then collapsed further. Pedro Ferreira picked up a yellow on 72 minutes. Then substitute Sorriso, who had only just come on at 82 minutes, was booked two minutes later at minute 84 for a foul. Sorriso also received a red card, leaving Santa Clara with ten men for the final stages. That is extraordinary. On as a substitute, booked, and off again inside three minutes. The attitude there is a problem Santa Clara's staff will need to address.

Despite that numerical advantage, Arouca could not find the equaliser. They had 10 shots in total to Santa Clara's 12. They had four shots on target to Santa Clara's five. The home side created crosses, they recycled possession, they kept probing. But the final execution was not there. Santa Clara's goalkeeper made three saves. Arouca's goalkeeper made three saves. It was tight in terms of genuine chances despite the one-sided possession.

Arouca's 64 per cent possession is a stat that means absolutely nothing if you win only one header in the right place. The thing is, Santa Clara had 49 duels won to Arouca's 40. They made 19 tackles to Arouca's 12. That is where the match was decided. Not on the ball but off it. Santa Clara competed harder in the physical battle and that is what won them this game.

Santa Clara fired 68 long passes to Arouca's 33. They were direct. They were aggressive on the counter. They recorded three counter-attacks to Arouca's zero. When you are sitting deep and protecting a lead, you need to know how to use the ball quickly when you win it. Santa Clara knew exactly what they were doing.

Arouca's clean sheet record coming in was strong over their last five Liga Portugal matches. That counted for nothing here because the basics of defending set the tone in the first 40 minutes and Arouca failed them. You cannot gift a quality side a two-goal cushion and expect to claw it back by just passing the ball around. Desire has to show in both boxes.

Verdict

Santa Clara deserve full credit. They came to a ground where Arouca had been winning, they took their chances early, and they defended with the kind of collective commitment that wins matches away from home. Losing Sorriso to a red card was needless and stupid, but by that point the damage was done.

Arouca will be frustrated. They should be. Three points dropped at home against a side they had drawn 2-2 with in the corresponding fixture earlier this year. The talent is there. The attitude in the first half was not. If you want to compete at the top of this league, you cannot switch off in your own stadium before the half-hour mark. That is non-negotiable.
