Zagłębie Lubin 0-0 Pogoń Szczecin: Lubin Dominate But Cannot Convert as Pogoń Survive With Ten Men

Zagłębie Lubin and Pogoń Szczecin played out a goalless draw in the Polish Ekstraklasa on Saturday evening. On paper it looks like a fair result. It was not. Lubin were the better side by a considerable distance and they will be furious with themselves. You do not get 17 shots, six on target, three big chances created, and walk away with nothing. That is a finishing problem. That is an attitude problem in front of goal. End of.

Lubin Dominate, Pogoń Hang On

The statistics tell the story plainly. Zagłębie Lubin had 63 per cent of the ball. They attempted 17 shots to Pogoń's eight. They had six shots on target to Pogoń's one. They created three big chances and missed all three. Pogoń Szczecin's goalkeeper made six saves. Six. That is a one-man performance keeping his side in the match, and Lubin let him do it.

The thing is, Lubin did the basics right in most areas. They moved the ball well, completing 385 of 461 passes at an 84 per cent accuracy rate. They put in 30 crosses, eight of which were accurate. Mendy was immediately booked in the 47th minute for a foul. He had been on the pitch for less than two minutes. That sums up the tone of the evening.

Pogoń Down to Ten Men but Lubin Still Cannot Score

Pogoń's manager Oscar Garcia was booked for an argument in the 52nd minute. That kind of touchline indiscipline tells you the visitors were under serious pressure at that point. And they were.

Zagłębie pushed hard. They put crosses in, they got bodies into the box, they had shots blocked and saved. Pogoń's goalkeeper kept producing. Six saves in a match is a significant workload and every one of them denied Lubin the goal their performance warranted.

Pogoń ended the match with a red card. The data confirms one red card for Szczecin. Losing a man should have been the moment Lubin finally broke through. It was not. Zagłębie made their fourth change in the 84th minute, sending on Szymon Łyczko for Mateusz Grzybek. Musa Juwara came on for Paul Mukairu deep into stoppage time for Pogoń.

None of it changed the scoreline.

What This Result Means

Pogoń Szczecin came into this match with two wins, two draws, and one loss across their five most recent Ekstraklasa matches. They had won their previous head-to-head encounter against Zagłębie, winning 1-0 back in May. They came here to make it difficult and they did exactly that.

Zagłębie Lubin had won two and lost two in their last five Ekstraklasa matches heading into this one. They needed a home win to show they could compete consistently. Instead they got a draw that flattered Pogoń considerably. Lubin had the desire. They competed. They did not execute and in a results business that is all that matters.

The thing is, you can live with a draw if you were second best. Lubin were not second best. They were considerably better and still could not win. That is the more damaging outcome. Possession means nothing if you cannot put the ball in the net. Seventeen shots means nothing if your big chances go begging. Standards in front of goal were unacceptable tonight and the manager will know it.

Pogoń take a hard-earned point on the road. Lubin are left to wonder how they did not win. That is the football. It is rarely just.
