Cesena Win 2-1 at Virtus Entella: Shpendi and Fiori Strike Before Half-Time

Cesena won 2-1 at Virtus Entella on Saturday evening. Final score, three points, end of. But how it happened and what it says about both sides is worth going through properly.

The First Half Decided It

The thing is, this match was done before the interval. Cesena scored twice inside 42 minutes and Entella spent the rest of the night chasing a game they had no real business losing so tamely at home.

Antonio Fiori opened the scoring with a header in the 25th minute. That is the basics of centre-forward play. Get in the box, attack the ball, put it in the net. No complications. Cesena were competing and Entella were not matching it.

Eleven minutes later, Cristian Shpendi made it 2-0 with a right-foot finish, assisted by Xavello Druiventak. Two goals in seventeen minutes. At home. Virtus Entella had no answer. Their shape was poor, their desire to win the physical battles was nowhere near good enough, and Cesena punished them for it.

Entella did pull one back before half-time. Andrea Tiritiello scored in the 42nd minute, assisted by Luca Vignali. Credit where it is due. They showed some reaction. But the damage was already done, and any momentum that goal should have given them was immediately undermined by Shpendi picking up a yellow card in first-half stoppage time for a foul. Starting the second half with a booked striker is a problem of your own making. Unacceptable.

What the Numbers Say About Entella

Listen, I do not need a laptop to understand what happened here. But the statistics make it plain regardless.

Virtus Entella managed just seven shots all match. Cesena had fourteen. Entella had three shots on target. So did Cesena, but Cesena scored twice from theirs. That is the difference between a side that is clinical and a side that is not.

The possession split was 59 to 41 in Entella's favour. Entella, at home, were the side with less of the ball. Cesena had 59 per cent possession, 123 attacks to Entella's 49, and 59 dangerous attacks to Entella's 21. When an away side is attacking nearly three times as often as the home side in terms of dangerous entries into your half, you have a serious attitude problem going on.

Entella committed 18 fouls. Cesena committed seven. Now, I have no objection to physicality. But 18 fouls usually means one of two things. Either you are hunting the ball aggressively and winning it, or you are late, disorganised, and getting beaten to the punch. The stats here suggest the latter. Cesena won 49 duels to Entella's 29. Entella were being outrun and out-competed in their own stadium, and all those fouls were the symptom, not the cure.

Cesena also put in 33 crosses to Entella's seven. They won six corners to Entella's two. The territorial dominance was total. And yet it finished 2-1. In a way, Entella should be grateful.

Second Half: Too Little, Too Late

Entella made changes. Matteo Guidi picked up a yellow card in the 50th minute and was substituted off at the 53rd minute along with Antonio Fiori, who had by then moved to the Cesena side of things given he scored their opener. Sorry, I should be clear. Fiori scored for Cesena. He was brought off at 53 minutes. Entella replaced him on the Cesena bench, as Gianluca Frabotta and Matteo Francesconi came on for Entella.

Cesena made their own changes. Luca Vignali, who had assisted the Tiritiello goal, went off at 69 minutes. Entella kept pressing but never really looked like they had the quality to unlock a Cesena side that was simply better organised and more switched on.

The second half produced no goals. Entella had the ball more in patches but did very little with it. Their lack of creativity was stark. Four key passes for the entire match against Cesena's eleven. When you are chasing a result, you need people making things happen. Entella had nobody capable of doing that consistently enough.

Luca Parodi picked up a yellow card for Entella in the 85th minute. Alessandro Diamanti was booked for an argument in the 89th minute. When your assistant or bench staff are getting carded in the dying minutes, it means frustration has taken over from accountability. That is what happens when standards slip during a match and there is nothing left to do except complain.

The Bigger Picture for Both Sides

Entella came into this match with two wins, one draw, and two losses from their last five Serie B fixtures. That is a middling return and nothing here suggested they are about to improve it. Conceding goals at the rate they have been, 12 against in their last ten, is a serious concern. Their clean sheet percentage across that ten-match sample is just 20 per cent. The basics of defending, organisation, desire, getting your body in the way, are not where they need to be.

Cesena, to be fair to them, earned this. They came here with no wins from their last five Serie B matches before today, three draws and two defeats. A performance like this, away from home, disciplined and clinical, suggests there is more in this squad than recent results implied. Winning 2-1 at someone else's ground with 59 per cent possession and 14 shots takes belief and organisation. They showed both.

The signal on Cesena to win came in at odds of 4.5 and landed. The under 2.5 goals call did not, which is fair enough given both teams scored before half-time. Three goals, both sides on the scoresheet. These things happen. You back your logic and move on.

Verdict

Cesena were better in every area that matters. They competed, they were clinical, and they managed the game. Entella were passive, undisciplined with their fouling, and had nothing in the way of creative threat to show for their home advantage.

This result is a warning for Entella's manager. The problems here are not complicated. The attitude and the basics need sorting. Fast.
