Stevenage 2-2 Doncaster Rovers: Four Goals, Three Yellow Cards, and Nobody Wins

Two points dropped or one point gained. That depends entirely on which dressing room you are sitting in after this one. Stevenage versus Doncaster Rovers produced a 2-2 draw that will frustrate both sets of players, and rightly so. Neither side could hold a lead. Neither side could defend when it mattered. That is the long and short of it.

The Match That Came Alive Late

For the best part of an hour, this was a match that did not ask much of anyone. Then, in the space of 25 minutes, it produced four goals and enough chaos to keep everyone interested. That is not a compliment to either team. That is what happens when the basics of defending break down and neither side has the concentration to see a result through.

Josh Magennis broke the deadlock for Stevenage on 57 minutes with a header from a Phoenix Patterson assist. Good delivery, good movement, simple execution. That is how you score goals. Stevenage deserved the lead at that point. They had won 55 duels to Doncaster's 31. They had completed 11 tackles to Doncaster's seven. The home side were doing the harder yards.

But Doncaster, to their credit, responded. Jack Senior levelled on 70 minutes with a left-foot shot. Then Owen Bailey put Doncaster in front on 80 minutes with a header from Bayley McCann's assist. McCann had only been on the pitch since half-time. That substitution paid off. That is accountability from a player stepping off the bench and making an immediate contribution.

Stevenage were not done. Oliver Sanderson, who had come on as a substitute at 71 minutes, headed home from a Patterson assist on 82 minutes to make it 2-2. A substitute scored the equaliser minutes after coming on. You can read that two ways. Either the manager got his changes right, or the starting players were not good enough to hold what they had. The thing is, when you concede on 80 minutes and need a substitute to rescue a point two minutes later, you have a defending problem. End of.

Doncaster's Discipline Was a Disgrace

Three yellow cards for Doncaster Rovers in a single match. Isaac Hutchinson was booked for a foul on 40 minutes. Jay McGrath followed on 56 minutes. Jack Senior, who had only just scored, collected his booking on 76 minutes for a foul. Senior scored, then got himself booked six minutes later. That tells you something about his attitude on the day. When you are trying to hold a lead, you do not give the referee reasons to get involved.

Listen, yellow cards happen in football. But three in one game from a team that was supposed to be competing for a result suggests a lack of composure. Sixteen fouls committed by Doncaster against nine from Stevenage. That is not aggression in a positive sense. That is sloppiness. That is players who are not thinking clearly about what the team needs in the moment.

Doncaster's manager made five substitutions in total. Broadbent came on at 63 minutes for Darren Robinson. Leon Ayinde replaced Tommi O'Reilly at 64 minutes. Seán Grehan came on for the already-booked Jay McGrath at the same time, which was the sensible call. Brandon Hanlan replaced Isaac Hutchinson, also at 64 minutes. Three changes at once after 64 minutes tells you the first half of that second period was not going to plan.

The Shape of the Game

Doncaster had 54 per cent of the ball and completed 261 passes to Stevenage's 207. They took 12 shots in total to Stevenage's nine. On the surface, the away side edged the statistical picture. But Stevenage had five shots on target to Doncaster's four. Stevenage won 24 successful headers to Doncaster's 12. Those aerial numbers are significant when three of the four goals in this match were headed in.

Stevenage put in 26 crosses and landed eight of them accurately. Doncaster put in 25 and landed four. The home side's delivery from wide areas was consistently better, and the scoreline in the second half reflected that. Both of Stevenage's goals came from headers assisted by Phoenix Patterson. When you have a player who can deliver the ball that consistently, you build around it. Patterson did not score but he was at the heart of both goals. That matters.

The thing is, Stevenage came into this match having won just one of their previous five completed League One matches, losing three and drawing one. They have conceded six goals in those five games and kept just one clean sheet. Doncaster were not in great recent form either, winning one, drawing two and losing two of their previous five. This was always going to be a match that neither side could afford to let slip. They both did exactly that.

The Verdict

A draw is a fair result. Both teams had their moments and neither could close the game out when they needed to. Stevenage will be more frustrated. They led, they equalised after going behind, and they are at home. Home teams should be winning these games. Three points at the Lamex Stadium is the bare minimum expectation. One point is not good enough.

Doncaster showed some fight to get back in front, and the contributions from their substitutes were genuine. But the discipline record in this game is a concern that the coaching staff need to address immediately. You cannot keep giving away free kicks at the rate they did and expect to win matches at this level. Standards have to be higher. That is non-negotiable.

Four goals, three yellow cards, and a point each. Both managers will be standing in the tunnel afterwards knowing their side gave something away today. That is the only honest conclusion.
