Right, where do I even start with this one. If you switched off after 85 minutes, mate, you missed absolute scenes. Śląsk Wrocław looked dead and buried, a goal down at home, staring at a defeat that would have left them bottom of the Ekstraklasa table after two games. Then... boom. Two goals. Four minutes apart. Job done. 2-1. Football is genuinely ridiculous sometimes and I love it.
How Did We Get Here?
Look, for large portions of this game Raków Częstochowa were the better side on the stats sheet. Seventeen shots to eleven. Eleven shots inside the box to seven. Four big chances created to Śląsk's three. Raków were doing the things that are supposed to lead to winning football matches. The trouble is, football doesn't care about supposed to.
The first half was tight. Both teams found their feet, both teams had moments, and then right on the stroke of half time things got spicy. Cards were flying for both sides after what the data tells us was an argument involving players from each team. Both sets of lads getting a yellow right before the whistle. That kind of half-time atmosphere doesn't exactly cool things down, does it. You just knew the second half was going to be something.
Raków Score But Leave Too Much On The Table
Raków came out of the break with intent. Straight away they made a substitution, clearly looking to push on and find the goal their performance deserved. And fair play to them, they got it. Sixty minutes on the clock, a right foot shot, and Raków were ahead. Their goalscorer got the hook himself just thirteen minutes later which felt a bit harsh on the lad, but Raków were sitting on a lead and probably fancied they could manage it home.
Here is where I want to talk about finishing though. Because Raków had four big chances in this game and missed three of them. Three! Śląsk had three big chances and missed one. When you are away from home, one-nil up, and you are leaving that many chances on the pitch... you are writing your own misery. Don't @ me on this.
Honestly the shot numbers tell a fascinating story. Raków had seventeen shots total. Śląsk had eleven. But look at shots on target. Raków managed only three on target from seventeen attempts. Śląsk put five on target from eleven. So the home side were actually more accurate when it mattered. That conversion rate from Raków, or the lack of it, is what ultimately cost them here.
The Last Five Minutes Were Pure Madness
Śląsk had been throwing bodies forward, Raków were picking up cards, there was a foul in the 81st minute, unsportsmanlike conduct in the 82nd. The temperature was rising. You could feel it coming.
Eighty-six minutes. Left foot shot. 1-1. Scenes in Wrocław. The Śląsk fans who had been sitting there watching their team huff and puff suddenly had something to believe in again. Raków had to regroup, had to hold their nerve, and they simply couldn't do it.
Ninety minutes. Left foot shot. Again. 2-1. That is it. That is the game. Two left-footed goals in four minutes to flip a match completely on its head. Back to the drawing board for Raków, who now sit bottom of the Ekstraklasa on zero points from two games. Tough watch if you are a Raków supporter, that.
What The Stats Actually Tell Us
Right, I actually looked at the numbers for once and a few things jumped out at me. Fifty-fifty possession, which surprised me given how the game felt. Both sides completing passes at a similar rate too, around 82 to 83 percent accuracy each. This was an evenly matched contest for most of the ninety minutes and the stats back that up.
Raków won more duels, 53 to 46. They also had more attacks in total, 92 to Śląsk's 79. But here is the thing. Both teams recorded exactly 59 dangerous attacks each. Mirror images of each other in the most important areas of the pitch. So when a game is that tight, that balanced, late goals and moments of quality are what separate the sides. And Śląsk found those moments right when they needed them most.
Raków also picked up two yellow cards in the second half, one for a foul and one for unsportsmanlike conduct, which suggests they were rattled as Śląsk pushed for the equaliser. Getting yourself booked when you are clinging to a lead is never a good sign. It tells you the pressure was real.
Where Does This Leave Both Clubs?
Śląsk are up to tenth in the Ekstraklasa with three points from two games. A win and a loss so far. Look at the fixtures ahead and they will be reasonably happy with that. They showed character tonight, which matters. You can work with character.
Raków though. Ooft. Bottom of the table, no points, and having dominated long stretches of two separate matches without getting the results to show for it. That will sting. They are clearly not short of attacking intent, seven goals scored across their recent form in other competitions tells you they can find the net. But in Ekstraklasa this season they have been punished for clinical failings at the worst possible moments. Three big chances missed tonight. That cannot keep happening.
The Śląsk keeper deserves a mention too. Three saves, a clean sheet was beyond him by the end, but he kept his side in the game long enough for the comeback to happen. Sometimes that is all a goalkeeper needs to do.
The Verdict
This was a genuinely entertaining game of football. Balanced for long periods, a bit of needle at half time, a goal that looked like it would settle things, and then two minutes of absolute chaos at the end to flip the entire result. The Ekstraklasa is off to a lively start. Raków need to find their composure in front of goal and fast. Śląsk meanwhile will take three points and a morale boost from coming back the way they did. You heard it here first, that late winner will matter come the end of the season. Trust the process... or don't, given my acca record. Either way, brilliant football.
