Sheriff 0-0 Aluminij: Dominance Without Delivery

Fifteen shots. Seven corners. Sixty-three percent of the ball. Zero goals. That is not a tactical problem. That is a finishing problem. That is an attitude problem in the final third. And no amount of possession is going to paper over that, end of.
Sheriff Did Everything But Score
The thing is, Sheriff were the better team. That is not even a debate. They dominated the ball, they dominated territory, and they created more than Aluminij at every level. One hundred and forty-six attacks to one hundred. Ninety dangerous attacks to forty-eight. Four shots on target to two. On paper, Sheriff should have won this football match. But football is not played on paper.
Fifteen shots. Four on target. You cannot be proud of that ratio. That is the basics failing you. When you have that much of the ball and you are putting eleven shots off target, someone up front is not doing their job. Simple as that. I do not need a laptop to tell me that a striker who misses the target eleven times in a game is having a bad day.
What frustrates me most is the conversion from dominance to danger to execution. Sheriff had ninety dangerous attacks. That is a real number. That is not possession for the sake of it, that is pressing forward, getting into threatening positions. And then nothing. Zero. A clean sheet for Aluminij, who came here to defend and did exactly that. You have to give them some credit for their discipline. But Sheriff let them off the hook completely.
Aluminij Did What They Came to Do
Listen, Aluminij are not here to entertain anyone. They came to Sheriff's ground, sat in, and made themselves difficult to beat. That is a valid approach. Seven shots, two on target, thirty-seven percent possession. They were not trying to win the game. They were trying not to lose it. And they succeeded.
The discipline held. Four corners conceded against a team pressing hard for ninety minutes. Only five fouls. They were compact, they were organised, and when they needed to foul to break up play they did it early, including straight after the restart at the top of the second half. That yellow at minute forty-six was a professional foul. It worked. Aluminij came here with a job to do and they did it. I respect that more than I respect pretty possession football that ends nil-nil.
Their away form in this competition reads one draw from one game. That draw is this one. Their home record is one loss. So they are actually better on the road than at home, which tells you something about how they set up when the pressure is off them. They come away, they sit deep, they compete on their own terms. That is not romantic football. It is effective football.
The Cards Told a Story
Two yellow cards for Sheriff. One for roughing at minute forty-eight, one for roughing at minute ninety. That tells me Sheriff were getting frustrated. When a team is camped on top of you and cannot score, eventually the discipline goes. The minute ninety card is pure frustration. That is a player who has been trying to force the issue all game and has nothing to show for it. It is unacceptable at any level. You keep your head, regardless.
Aluminij's card at minute forty-six was cynical and smart. Sheriff's cards were emotional. That is the difference in mentality between a team executing a game plan and a team unravelling when results do not go their way.
Eight Substitutions and Still Nil-Nil
Seven substitutions across both teams. Both managers tried to change the game. Sheriff made three changes, starting at minute sixty-eight. Aluminij made four, the last one in at minute eighty-seven. That is a manager scrambling for something. It did not work for either side.
The thing is, when your substitutions do not work in a game like this, you have to look at the quality of what you are bringing on. Are they changing the intensity? Are they changing the threat? From the evidence of the final scoreline, clearly not. Sheriff had three changes and still could not find the net with fifteen shots. That is a problem that goes deeper than personnel.
What This Means Going Forward
Sheriff are unbeaten in this competition. Won one, drawn one, zero goals conceded. That clean sheet record is solid. But they have only scored one goal from two games. You cannot build a European campaign on that. The desire to win is clearly there. The basics of defending are clearly there. The standards in front of goal are not good enough. That needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed now, not after they exit.
Aluminij are bottom of their own momentum slope, down one in the last five overall. A loss at home, a draw away. They are surviving rather than competing. That draw today keeps them in the tie but they are going to have to score goals at some point. Two shots on target in ninety minutes away from home is not a platform for progress.
This was a game between a team that could not finish and a team that was not trying to start. The result was inevitable the moment Aluminij set up to defend. Sheriff did not have the quality or the ruthlessness to break that down despite all the territory they earned. That accountability falls on the attackers. You get the ball. You create the chances. You put it away. That is the job. They did not do the job today.
