Rodez 2-2 Pau result, stats and report

This one had everything. Two goals from Babacar Leye. A Pau red card before the half hour. A ten-man side equalising not once but twice. And a finish that will have the Rodez dressing room staring at the ceiling on Friday night wondering how they did not win this game. The final score was 2-2, and to be fair to Pau, they earned it. Though Rodez will not see it that way. They should not see it that way. Dropping two points at home to a side that came here in the form they did is unacceptable. End of.

The Opening Burst

Babacar Leye settled any nerves inside two minutes. A header at the second minute, assisted by Jessy Benet, and Rodez were in front almost before Pau had touched the ball. The thing is, when you get a start like that at home, you control the game. You see it out. You do not let a team that has lost four of its last five Ligue 2 matches come back and nick a point.

Pau had Raphaël Lipinski booked for a foul in the third minute. The tone was set early. They were already under pressure, a man walking a tightrope, and Rodez had the momentum and the crowd. Everything pointed to a comfortable home win.

Pau Hit Back Through Baldé

Then came the moment that changed the match. Ibrahima Baldé equalised in the 28th minute with a right-foot shot, assisted by Lipinski, the same man who had been booked moments earlier. Give Pau credit. They did not shrink. They competed. But Rodez had let them back in, and that is a mentality question as much as anything else.

Leye grabbed his second of the night in the 37th minute, a field goal assisted by Anthony Briançon, and Rodez went into the break 2-1 up. You would back them every day of the week to hold that lead at home. Pau went into the tunnel with their goalkeeper having made three saves, Rodez pushing forward, and a yellow card also shown to Rodez's Hacène Benali in first-half stoppage time adding a bit of needle to proceedings.

The Second Half Collapse

Rodez made their substitutions. So did Pau. And then Loni Laurent received a yellow card in the 70th minute followed immediately by a second yellow in the 71st. That is the moment where Rodez should have put this game to bed. You are 2-1 up, your opponents are down to ten men, you have the ball, you have the crowd. What do you do? You execute the basics. You keep the ball, you run the clock, and you make the game safe.

They did not do that. Pau sent on Octave Joly from the bench in the 72nd minute, a man who had been on the pitch barely ten minutes, and he scored with his left foot in the 83rd to make it 2-2. Assisted by Mathis Magnin. A substitute equalising against ten men with seven minutes to play. That is not bad luck. That is a failure of standards and accountability from the home side.

Magnin himself picked up a yellow card in the 89th minute. By then the damage was done.

What the Stats Tell You

Pau had 58 per cent possession and completed 405 passes at an 82 per cent accuracy rate. Rodez had 42 per cent of the ball and completed 281 passes at 75 per cent. So the team with more of the ball, more attacks, more dangerous attacks, 145 to 77 in attacks and 81 to 25 in dangerous attacks, still could not win the match.

Pau had five shots on target to Rodez's two. They had 14 shots in total to Rodez's ten. The hosts created more crosses, 44 to 13, but the efficiency simply was not there. Pau's goalkeeper made three saves. Rodez's goalkeeper made zero. When you read that back, the result starts to make a grim kind of sense.

Pau committed 21 fouls and picked up three yellow cards and a red. Rodez committed eight fouls and took one yellow. Discipline was a clear problem for Pau across ninety minutes, and the red card for Laurent should have sealed their fate. That it did not says everything about Rodez's inability to close out a match when it matters.

The Bigger Picture

Coming into this match, Rodez had won four of their last five Ligue 2 matches, including a 5-2 win over Nantes six days earlier. They had the confidence, the form, and home advantage. Pau had won just one of their last five, losing four, with defeats to Nancy, Annecy, and heavy losses elsewhere in their recent record.

This was a match Rodez were supposed to win. The attitude to see it through simply was not there. You cannot be 2-1 up at home against ten men and draw 2-2. That is a result that needs to be answered for in that dressing room. No excuses. No explanations. Just look at the basics and fix them.

Pau, to their credit, showed desire and kept competing even when everything was against them. Whether they can build on a point given the sending off and the yellow cards accumulated is another question. But tonight, they earned the right to take something from this ground.

For Rodez, this hurts. And it should.
