Real Valladolid 0-3 Oviedo. Write it down. That scoreline is not a fluke. It is not bad luck. It is what happens when a team with one win in their last five La Liga 2 matches comes up against a side who were organised, disciplined, and willing to do the dirty work. Valladolid were second to everything that mattered. End of.

The thing is, Oviedo did not even need to be spectacular. They had 59 per cent possession, they worked their chances, and they punished a Valladolid defence that looked short on confidence and shorter on accountability. Oviedo came here and took this game by the scruff of the neck from the moment Carlos Domínguez put them ahead on 25 minutes.

How the Goals Went In

The opening goal told you everything about Valladolid's attitude on the day. Dani Calvo had already picked up a yellow card for a foul in the 12th minute. Iván Alejo had been booked for Oviedo at 23. Then, two minutes later, Domínguez found space and finished with his left foot to make it 1-0. Valladolid had already given away cheap fouls and were conceding territory. They had six offsides in this match. Six. That tells you the shape was all over the place.

Álvaro Aceves was booked for Oviedo at 27 minutes for an argument. Fine. But even with two of their players on bookings, Oviedo did not let their standards drop. That is desire. That is the difference between a team with a winning mentality and one that crumbles.

Youness Lachhab picked up a yellow card for Valladolid at the half hour. So by the break, both sides had players on bookings and Oviedo were a goal up. The half-time substitution of Alberto Reina, replaced by Enzo Pérez Miranda for Valladolid, suggested the manager knew something had to change. It did not change enough.

Within eight minutes of the restart, the game was over as a contest. Dani Calvo, the same man who had been booked in the first half, scored with his right foot on 53 minutes. A defender. Scoring from open play. Oviedo had the desire to get their defensive players into dangerous areas while Valladolid were still trying to find a foothold in a game they were already losing. Then Pablo Sáenz made it 3-0 on 56 minutes, finishing with his left foot, with Enzo Pérez Miranda credited as the related player. Three goals, one of them from a centre-back, and Valladolid had no response.

The Stats Do Not Lie

Listen, I do not need a spreadsheet to tell me Valladolid were poor. But the numbers confirm it anyway. Oviedo had 137 attacks to Valladolid's 87. Oviedo had 51 dangerous attacks to Valladolid's 34. Oviedo put in 27 total crosses to Valladolid's five. Seven of those crosses were accurate. Valladolid managed one.

The thing is, Valladolid actually had 12 shots in total, same as Oviedo who had 13. But here is where it falls apart. Valladolid had six shots on target and scored three goals. Oviedo had one shot on target and scored zero. Wait. Reread that. Oviedo won 3-0 with one shot on target. That is not the stat of a team that was clinical. That is the stat of a team whose opponents were so disorganised they were scoring own goals and conceding soft efforts that should never go in. Valladolid's goalkeeper made just one save. Oviedo's keeper made four. The scoreline still reads 3-0 to the away side.

Oviedo had 59 per cent possession and completed 433 passes at an accuracy of 83 per cent. Valladolid managed 378 passes at 76 per cent. When you cannot keep the ball and you cannot defend without it, you get three scored against you. That is not tactics. That is basics.

Valladolid's Form Was Screaming a Warning

This result did not come out of nowhere. Across their last five matches in La Liga 2, Valladolid had won one, drawn one, and lost three. They had scored just two goals and conceded five. Across their last ten, they had won three, drawn one, and lost six, conceding 13 in the process. They shipped four against Racing Santander. They lost to Almería, Deportivo La Coruña, and Las Palmas. The standards at this club are unacceptable right now.

Oviedo came into this on different ground. Across four completed matches in this competition, they had one win, two draws, and one loss. They had kept three clean sheets in those four games. A 75 per cent clean sheet rate. That is a team that is hard to beat. Valladolid could not impose themselves on a side that was set up to be compact and to make life difficult. Oviedo managed that without needing to be anywhere near their best.

What This Means

Valladolid made five substitutions. They brought on Jacobo González for Mikel Goti at 62 minutes, brought on Estanis Pedrola for Alexandru Ișfan at the same time, then David Jiménez for Pablo Sáenz at 77, and Diego Menéndez Secades for Dani Villahermosa at 83. That is a manager throwing bodies at a problem he created by not getting his team right from the start. The game was gone by the 56th minute. Substitutions at that point are just paperwork.

Oviedo's manager used six substitutions in total. Yeray Cabanzón came on for Tay Abed at 55. Víctor Fernández Durán replaced Kaj de Rooij at the same time. Stanko Juric came on for Álex Balboa and Juanmi Latasa for Julien Ponceau at 69. Víctor Barberá replaced Robin van Duiven at 80. That is sensible game management. Protect the lead. Keep fresh legs in. Do the job properly.

Valladolid have a serious problem. The desire is not there. The accountability is not there. Three goals conceded at home, and the opposition's keeper was busier than theirs. That is not a shape issue. That is not a rotation issue. That is a standards issue. Someone at that football club needs to look at these results and ask some very direct questions. Right now, from where I am sitting, nobody is answering them.
