Let me tell you what I saw in Porto on Tuesday night. I saw a Manchester City side that did the basics, controlled the tempo, and had a striker who punishes you the moment you switch off. I saw a Porto side that competed hard in patches but never truly threatened. Not once. Porto finished the night with zero shots on target. Zero. In a Champions League match at home. That is unacceptable. End of.

The Match In Plain Terms

Manchester City won this 2-0 and it was not as close as that scoreline suggests. City had 64 per cent of the ball, 20 shots to Porto's five, and six big chances created to Porto's none. Porto's goalkeeper made eight saves. City's goalkeeper made none. When the numbers look like that, you are not watching a contest. You are watching a team impose its will on another, and Porto had very little answer for it.

The thing is, Porto were not passive. They won more duels on the night, 50 to City's 42. They had 20 tackles to City's 18. They tried to make it a scrap. Credit where it is due, they put a shift in. But desire without quality in the final third means nothing. Four shots total, none on target. Porto could have run until their legs gave out and it would not have mattered.

Haaland: The Difference

Erling Haaland scored both goals and it is as simple as that. The first came in the 47th minute, a header assisted by Enzo Fernandez, arriving right at the start of the second half when Porto were still finding their feet after the break. That is not an accident. That is a striker who knows exactly when to hurt you. The second came in the 90th minute, a right-foot shot assisted by Rayan Ait-Nouri, killing off any slim hope Porto had of mounting something late on.

Listen, I played against strikers like this. You give them one moment of sloppiness and the ball is in the net before you have blinked. Porto gave him two. He took both. That is accountability from a striker's point of view, and it is a complete lack of accountability from a defensive one.

For the record, Haaland picked up a yellow card for an argument in stoppage time. A moment of frustration after the job was done. It changes nothing about his night. Two goals, two assists for City in total, clean sheet. That is the whole story.

The First Half: City Building Pressure

The first 45 minutes ended goalless but City were already in control. They were moving the ball at 92 per cent pass accuracy compared to Porto's 81 per cent. They were creating dangerous attacks at more than double Porto's rate, 55 to 24. The pressure was building. It was only a matter of time.

Josko Gvardiol picked up a yellow card for a foul in the 37th minute, and significantly, he did not make it past the half-time break. He was substituted off in the 48th minute, replaced by Abdukodir Khusanov. Whether that was a precautionary call because of the booking or a tactical decision, it disrupted City's defensive shape at the very moment Porto needed to find a way back into the match. Porto could not take advantage. That says a great deal about their attacking standards on the night.

Porto's Night Goes From Bad to Worse

Gianluigi Donnarumma received a yellow card in the 49th minute for a foul. That is two cards inside two minutes at the start of the second half. Porto's manager Francesco Farioli picked up a booking himself in the 86th minute for an argument. Pablo Rosario followed with another yellow in stoppage time, also for an argument. The whole Porto operation fell apart in those final stages. When a team starts arguing with officials instead of competing on the pitch, you know the standards have slipped completely.

The thing is, seven offsides for Porto compared to City's one tells you something about their attacking intent and execution, or rather the lack of it. They were trying to run in behind. They were being caught out. The basics were not there.

City's Control Was Total

City made five substitutions in the second half, rotating and managing the game with complete confidence. Rayan Cherki made way for Elliot Anderson in the 62nd minute. Antoine Semenyo was replaced by Iliman Ndiaye in the same window. Phil Foden came off for Rayan Ait-Nouri at 75 minutes, and Ayyoub Bouaddi was replaced by Mateo Kovacic at the same time. Ait-Nouri, to his credit, got on the pitch and immediately contributed an assist for the second goal. That is what competition for places looks like when it works properly.

Porto also made their changes, bringing on Santiago Gimenez for Andre Silva in the 73rd minute and Francisco Moura for Martim Fernandes at the same time. Seko Fofana replaced Gabri Veiga in the 83rd minute. None of it changed the shape of the match. City had already done the damage.

What This Result Tells You

City's 15 key passes to Porto's five. City's five accurate crosses to Porto's two. City's ten interceptions to Porto's one. These are not just numbers. They tell you about attitude and standards across every department of the pitch. City worked hard in and out of possession. Porto worked hard but only in one direction.

Listen, Porto are not a bad side. But they were outclassed completely here and they need to look hard at their attacking accountability. Zero shots on target at home in a Champions League match is simply not good enough. You cannot dress that up. Their manager was booked for arguing in the final minutes. That is not leadership. That is frustration at standards not being met, and by then it was far too late to do anything about it.

Manchester City go away from Porto with a 2-0 win, a clean sheet, and a Haaland brace. The basics were executed. The desire was there. The result reflects it. End of.
