Matheus Cunha Brace Seals 3-2 Comeback Win for Manchester United Against AS Roma

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Manchester United 3-2 AS Roma. Write it down. Because that scoreline tells you almost nothing about what actually happened on Tuesday night. This was a match with two red cards worth of drama, a goalkeeper subbed off before half-time, a sending off in injury time, and a man who scored twice in three minutes to win it. If you want calm and controlled, look elsewhere. This was a fight.

Roma Take Control Early

AS Roma came to Old Trafford with a point to prove and they proved it inside 17 minutes. Matías Soulé opened the scoring in the 11th minute, finishing with his left foot after a move that involved Rodrigo Mora. Composed. Direct. The basics done well.

Then came the penalty. Donyell Malen stepped up in the 17th minute and Roma were two goals to the good. United had not competed in that opening spell. They were slow to the ball, slow to press, and Roma punished them for it. That is what happens when your desire goes missing in the first quarter of a Champions League game. You go two down.

The Chaos Before Half-Time

The thing is, this match had already lost the plot by the 20th minute. Bruno Fernandes picked up a yellow card for an argument. Soulé got one too, for the same incident. At the same minute. Whatever was said, neither of them came out of it looking good. That is not leadership. That is indiscipline.

Then Roma lost their goalkeeper. Devyne Rensch went off in the 21st minute and Emanuele Lulli came on. By the 35th minute, Lulli had a yellow card of his own, booked for handball. Malen added another booking in the 42nd minute for a foul. Roma had three bookings before the interval. Three. In a match they were winning.

Listen, you do not control a game by collecting cards. You control it by keeping the ball and staying disciplined. Roma did neither. They handed United a lifeline before the whistle had gone for half-time.

United Level Through Fernandes Penalty

The second half brought a VAR check in the 58th minute and a penalty for Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and converted. Two-one. United had something to play for and Roma, now carrying a makeshift goalkeeper and a squad full of bookings, were beginning to wobble.

United's stats told the story of a team that had grown into the game. They finished with 15 shots to Roma's seven. They won 65 duels to Roma's 46. Their successful dribble rate was 65 per cent compared to Roma's 25 per cent. United were doing more of everything that matters in the second half. The desire was there when it had been absent at the start. That inconsistency is a problem. You cannot switch it on and off in the Champions League.

Cunha Decides It

Matheus Cunha had come on and made himself impossible to ignore. In the 83rd minute, assisted by Bruno Fernandes, Cunha equalised with a right-foot shot. Two-two. Then, three minutes later in the 86th minute, Cunha struck again, this time assisted by substitute Shea Lacey. Three-two. Manchester United had turned a two-goal deficit into a lead in the final ten minutes of a Champions League knockout match.

That is not luck. That is desire in its rawest form. Cunha ran, he competed, he finished. Those are the basics. When you execute them under that kind of pressure, you deserve to win.

Cunha's Red Card and the Final Whistle

Then Cunha, the man who had just won the game, earned a yellow card in the 87th minute for unsportsmanlike conduct. Then, in the 90th minute, he picked up a second yellow for a foul and was sent off. So the man of the match left the pitch early having won and then nearly complicated the job in the same breath.

United finished the game with ten men. Roma could not capitalise. The referee blew and United had their three points.

What the Numbers Say

Manchester United registered 15 shots in total. Six were on target. Roma managed seven shots with four on target. United had 11 key passes to Roma's four. United attempted more crosses, won more headers, and completed 65 per cent of their dribbles. When United were at it, they were the better side by a distance. The question is why it took them 80 minutes to get there.

Roma's discipline was a disgrace. Three bookings before half-time, their goalkeeper subbed off in the 21st minute, and a defensive structure that looked organised until it suddenly did not. They had looked like a team with real purpose in those opening 17 minutes. Then they let the game slip through their fingers by losing their composure when they needed it most.

Connor's Verdict

Manchester United going into this match had won one and lost two of their three completed Champions League matches this campaign. Roma came in with one win, one draw, and one loss from their three. Neither side had been convincing. What we got was a match that reflected that reality for most of its duration.

The thing is, United found a way. When it mattered, when the clock was running out and they were still level, they produced the moments that decided the match. Cunha's two goals in three minutes is the kind of contribution that wins European nights. The red card at the end is the kind of stupidity that reminds you nothing is clean in football.

Roma will feel they had this. They were right to feel that way in the first half. They had the lead, they had the control, and then they threw it away piece by piece with every needless booking and every lapse in concentration. Roma conceded three goals from their three completed Champions League matches before tonight combined. Tonight alone they conceded three.

Accountability. Both teams needed more of it tonight. United just happened to find theirs at the right moment. End of.
