Roma had six. The home side also missed two big chances, which is unacceptable at this level. If you are getting into those positions in a Champions League tie and you are not converting, you do not deserve all three points. But the evidence on the pitch pointed clearly to Fenerbahçe as the side that wanted to win this game more. Fenerbahçe's goalkeeper made four saves. Roma's made two. The woodwork was struck once, by Fenerbahçe. There is a story in those numbers that Roma's possession stats cannot rewrite.

Fenerbahçe also won 51 duels to Roma's 37. That is not a minor detail. Winning your duels is one of the basics of this game. You win your duels, you compete for second balls, and you give yourself a chance. Fenerbahçe did that. Roma, for all their passing, did not match them physically when it mattered.

The Card Situation Was a Mess

The second half turned scrappy and, frankly, it was not a good advertisement for either side's discipline. Devyne Rensch picked up a yellow card for Roma on 47 minutes. He was then substituted off at 72 minutes, which at least showed the manager had the sense to remove a booking risk from the equation. Mert Müldür added a second Fenerbahçe yellow two minutes later, also for arguing. Four yellow cards in total for Fenerbahçe across the 90. Roma picked up two.

There was also a VAR review involving Paulo Dybala on 69 minutes, right in the middle of that chaotic spell. Whatever came of it did not change the scoreline. What it did do was add to the sense that this game had lost any coherent shape in the second half and was threatening to boil over.

Roma's Substitution Pattern Raised Questions

Roma made five substitutions. Niccolò Pisilli came on for Manu Koné at 53 minutes. Then at 74 minutes, Leonardo Balerdi replaced Gianluca Mancini, Nahuel Molina came in for the carded Rensch, and Rodrigo Mora replaced Matías Soulé. Marten de Roon came on at 87 minutes for Donyell Malen. That is a lot of moving parts. The thing is, when you are chasing a result you cannot afford to be shuffling your deck that aggressively and losing cohesion in the process. Roma never really threatened to reclaim the lead after the equaliser. Bryan Cristante, who scored the goal, then collected a yellow card himself on 86 minutes, which tells you everything about how the game deteriorated for them.

Lukaku came on at 72 minutes for Fenerbahçe, replacing Vedat Muriqi. A big man on with twenty minutes to go when the score is level at home. The intent was clear. But those two missed big chances meant it did not matter in the end.

The Verdict

Fenerbahçe's unbeaten Champions League run continues. Three wins and two draws from five completed matches before this fixture, and now they add another draw to that record. They have not lost. That shows attitude and it shows a mentality to compete at this level. But missing two big chances at home in a game you dominated physically will cost you points eventually. Accountability has to be there for that.

Roma will take the point away from Istanbul and call it a decent result. To be fair, it probably is. But if you look at who controlled the second half, who won more duels, who created more big chances, Roma did not earn that point. They survived for it. There is a difference. In a results business, both mean the same thing on paper. On the pitch, one of those is a warning sign.
