Look, this is where I want to pump the brakes for a second. Because Larne are a Northern Irish club in the Champions League qualifiers. Let that sit for a moment. They are here. They got through their earlier rounds to get to this stage. That in itself is a proper achievement for a club from Inver Park in Antrim.

Their manager made five substitutions, which suggests they were trying things, trying to change the game even when it was clearly gone. The 46th minute sub especially, straight after conceding the second goal just before half time, showed intent. They were not rolling over and waiting for the final whistle. Red Star scored the third goal at 49 minutes anyway, so the tactical change did not work, but at least Larne kept trying to find solutions.

Their away record coming into this was actually decent in a small sample. One win from one away game in European competition this campaign, keeping a clean sheet, scoring once. Tonight was just a different level entirely. Red Star are a proper club, serial Serbian champions, and they showed it.

Red Star's Fourth and Fifth: Twisting the Knife

The fourth goal came at 60 minutes, same player getting on the scoresheet again with an assist involved too. Then at 79 minutes, a fifth. By that point Red Star had made a load of changes, five substitutions in total, rotating the squad and still finding the net.

That is the bit that really stands out to me. Red Star were rotating. Fresh legs, squad players getting minutes, and they still scored. Still kept the clean sheet. Still looked dangerous every time they went forward. That is the mark of genuine quality rather than just a team beating up on weaker opposition. Even their depth was too good for Larne.

Larne's free kick count was sixteen compared to Red Star's five. They were fouled almost three times as often as they fouled. That tells you the story of a team that was chasing, stretching, frustrated, having to hack and hack just to slow the wave of attacks coming at them. Even that tactic did not do much good.

What Happens Next

Red Star advance. Obviously. The aggregate is nine nil across the two legs and that is one of the most one-sided qualifying ties you will see. They were dominant at home, they were dominant away, and they kept two clean sheets doing it. If there are stronger sides in the next round they will face a stiffer test, but right now they look in excellent nick.

For Larne, this is still a moment to be proud of. Getting to this stage of Champions League qualifying as a Northern Irish club is not something that happens every season. The scoreline is brutal. The experience of playing in Belgrade under these lights, in front of that crowd, is something those players will not forget. Sometimes football does both things at once. Proper achievement and proper beating all at the same time.
