Montréal went into this fixture having also lost to Philadelphia Union and been torn apart 7-1 by Inter Miami earlier in that run. Conceding two to Charlotte is almost the good news by comparison, but it is still unacceptable for a home side that dominated possession.
Two yellow cards on the night. Loturi for a foul. Longstaff for time wasting at 2-1 down. The second one there is the one that bothers me. Time wasting when you are losing is a mentality problem. Sort yourselves out.
Charlotte: Compact, Clinical, Deserved
Charlotte came here unbeaten in their last five MLS matches before this game, picking up three wins and two draws. They had scored eleven and conceded five in that run. That is the form of a team that knows how to compete.
They did not dominate this match. They did not need to. Charlotte won it with desire and execution when it counted. Abada equalised quickly after going behind, which shows character. Then Toklomati came off the bench and finished the job in the 81st minute. That is what good substitutes do. They change games.
Charlotte's goalkeeper made four saves. Their defenders blocked seven shots. They were organised, they were compact, and they made Montréal work for every chance. The fact that Montréal had fourteen goal attempts and Charlotte had five tells you Charlotte defended their box better than Montréal attacked it. End of.
Charlotte also had three big chances created to Montréal's two, and they converted what they needed to from those situations. Montréal created more opportunities in raw volume but were less effective with the big moments.
