How It Happened

Bogdan Popov settled it on 74 minutes. A header, assisted by Luca Magnino. Popov had only come on at the hour mark, replacing Stiven Shpendi, and he did what a substitute is supposed to do. He competed. He got on the end of something. He put it in the net. That is the job. End of.

Up until that point this was a game Carrarese were shaping. They had 59 per cent of the ball. They attempted 16 shots to Empoli's nine. They put in 33 crosses to Empoli's eleven. Seven corners to one. Their goalkeeper made five saves. Empoli's keeper made one. One. Carrarese did everything except score, and that is the only thing that actually counts.

Carrarese: All the Ball, None of the Cutting Edge

Listen, you cannot feel sorry for a team that had six accurate crosses and seven blocked shots and still came away with nothing. At some point you have to look at your forwards and ask a straight question. Why are you not scoring?

Carrarese had 145 attacks in this match. A hundred and forty-five. Empoli had 91. Carrarese had 53 dangerous attacks to Empoli's 37. They had more shots inside the box, more shots outside the box, more shots total. Their pass completion was 87 per cent. They were the dominant team in every meaningful territorial sense.

And they got nothing from it.

The thing is, dominance without execution is just running about. I have seen it hundreds of times. A team that controls the ball, wins the corner count, puts ball after ball into the box, and somehow cannot convert a single chance. Carrarese's one big chance created came and went. When your shot-stopper is making five saves and your opponents' keeper only has to deal with one, something has gone badly wrong in the final third.

Two yellow cards for Carrarese did not help either. Luca Magnino went in the book for a foul on 51 minutes, then Filippo Distefano picked one up for an argument on 87. Neither player showed the discipline the situation demanded. You are chasing the game. You cannot afford to be reckless. That is basic accountability and it was not there.

Empoli: Ruthless When It Mattered

Empoli were not pretty. Their recent form across five Serie B matches showed two wins, one draw and two losses, so nobody was calling them a force to be reckoned with coming into this. They lost their last match before this one, going down 1-3 to Mantova.

But here is what Empoli did well. They were compact. They stayed organised. They made ten interceptions to Carrarese's six. They won 58 duels to Carrarese's 46. They competed for every second ball. When you are the away side and you are being outpassed and outshot the way Empoli were, those duels and those interceptions are what keep you in the game long enough for something to happen.

And something did happen. Popov arrived off the bench and headed them in front. Job done.

Their keeper only needed one save because their defensive shape forced Carrarese into low-quality attempts. The woodwork was struck once. That is how fine the margins were. Carrarese were not getting clean, clear-cut openings. They were hitting shots from distance and pumping crosses that got headed away. Empoli's defensive unit kept their standards when it mattered most.

The Substitutions

Empoli made their moves early. Jacopo Martini came on for Luka Topalovic at 60 minutes. Then at 61 minutes Carrarese responded, bringing on Filippo Bandinelli for Edoardo Biondini and Bogdan Popov for Stiven Shpendi. Popov scored thirteen minutes later.

Then Empoli made three changes at 71 and 72 minutes. Niccolò Belloni replaced Gabriele Parlanti, Mattia Finotto came on for Moustapha Cissé, and Matthias Braunöder replaced Nicolás Schiavi. At 78 minutes both sides made further changes. Empoli brought on Nicolò Cudrig for Fabio Andrea Ruggeri. Carrarese introduced Karim Zedadka for Matteo Egan. Duccio Degli Innocenti then came on for Edoardo Saporiti at 82 minutes for Carrarese.

The pattern of substitutions told its own story. Empoli were managing the lead and introducing fresh legs to hold shape. Carrarese were throwing on attackers trying to find an equaliser that never came. That is what losing looks like from the inside.

The Bigger Problem for Carrarese

Look at Carrarese's form across their last five Serie B matches. No wins. Two draws. Three losses. Three goals scored, eight conceded. A clean sheet percentage of 20 per cent. That is a team with a serious problem. They drew with Ascoli the week before, losing 1-2 to Mantova the week before that. Before this season even got going properly they had lost to Virtus Entella and Frosinone and drawn with Cesena.

The thing is, you cannot keep dominating matches territorially and not converting. At some point the manager has to look at the basics. Are we organised in attack? Are the right runners arriving at the right time? Are we creating proper chances or just painting pretty pictures with possession?

59 per cent of the ball and no goals is not a style problem. It is a standards problem. Carrarese have the desire to compete, clearly they do. You do not generate 145 attacks in 90 minutes without putting in the work. But desire without execution gets you nothing in this league. Or any league.

Verdict

Empoli came, they defended, they nicked it. Popov's 74th-minute header was the only goal and it was enough. Carrarese dominated the game by most measures and lost it anyway. That tells you everything you need to know about where their season is heading if they do not fix the basics in front of goal.

Unacceptable performance in terms of output. Good enough from Empoli to take the three points. Sometimes football is exactly that simple.
