Krstović Brace Seals Atalanta 3-1 Win Over Hapless Venezia

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Venezia arrived at Atalanta having lost all five of their completed Serie A matches in the sample window. They left having lost all six. The thing is, that scoreline flatters them. This was a mess from the first whistle.

Two Goals in Six Minutes. Game Over Before It Started.

Franck Kessié opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a right-foot shot, assisted by Nikola Krstović. Two minutes later, Krstović turned from assistant to executioner. He met an Eljif Elmas delivery with a header in the sixth minute and it was 2-0. Six minutes gone. Game over, as far as I was concerned.

Venezia's response? An emergency substitution in the eighth minute. Richie Sagrado came on for Thierry Correia at minute eight. Something had gone wrong before they had barely broken a sweat. That tells you everything about the standards at that club right now.

Krstović completed his brace on the half-hour mark with a right-foot shot to make it 3-0. Three goals in 30 minutes. Atalanta with 36 per cent of the ball. Listen, you do not need the majority of possession to win a match. You need desire, execution, and the basics done right. Atalanta had all three. Venezia had none.

Venezia's Goal Changes Nothing

Antoine Hainaut headed one back for Venezia in the 37th minute, assisted by Richie Sagrado. Credit where it is due, that is a goal. But let us be honest about what it was. It was a consolation on a bad day against a side that had already switched off. Venezia were 3-0 down and they pulled one back. They still lost 3-1. It did not change the accountability question one bit.

Matías Moreno was booked for a foul in the 18th minute. Juan Jesus followed him into the referee's book in the 42nd minute. Two yellow cards before half-time. That is not bad luck. That is an attitude problem. When you are already 3-0 down and your defenders are still giving away cheap fouls, something is wrong at the root.

The Stats Tell the Full Story

Venezia had 64 per cent of the ball. They completed 526 passes at 91 per cent accuracy. They had 78 dangerous attacks to Atalanta's 26. They had 19 total shots. They hit the woodwork twice. They still lost 3-1, and they deserved to. This is the sort of performance that looks productive on paper and achieves absolutely nothing. Possession without penetration is just keeping the ball warm for the opposition to nick it back and score.

Atalanta had 11 shots on target to Venezia's four. That is the only number that matters alongside the scoreline. The Bergamo side were clinical. They created six big chances and, yes, they missed four of them. But they converted when it mattered. Venezia created five big chances and missed all four of theirs that they failed to take. End of.

Venezia's goalkeeper made seven saves. Seven. Atalanta's keeper made three. That tells you where the match was being played and who was carrying the greater threat in front of goal.

Atalanta's Efficiency Without Dominance

This is what a well-drilled side looks like. Atalanta sat on 36 per cent possession and still put three past their opponents by half-time. They had 332 passes to Venezia's 580. They did not try to out-pass anyone. They picked their moments, moved the ball quickly, and Krstović led the line with real purpose.

The service into Krstović was sharp. Kessié found him for the opener. Elmas set him up for the header. And then Krstović finished his brace on his own terms. That is a striker who knows his job and does it without overcomplicating things. Basics, executed at pace.

Atalanta's form coming into this had been patchy. In their five completed Serie A matches in the sample window, they had won two and lost three, conceding seven goals along the way. They lost to Juventus 0-2, to Cagliari 1-2, and to AS Roma 1-2 in consecutive matches before back-to-back wins against Bologna and Sassuolo. This was a continuation of that upturn and they needed it.

Elmas Ends on a Sour Note

The only blot on Atalanta's evening was Eljif Elmas. He was involved in a VAR review in the 88th minute, picked up a VAR-related card, and then received a red card for a foul in the 89th minute. After a night where he had contributed the assist for Krstović's header, that is a bitterly unnecessary way to finish. You compete for 90 minutes. Losing your head when the match is won is unacceptable. Full stop.

Atalanta had made five substitutions by that point. Samardžić replaced De Ketelaere at 60 minutes. Bernasconi came on for Bellanova and Kolasinac replaced Scalvini at 67 minutes. Gaetano replaced Kessié and Zalewski replaced Rowe at 76 minutes. Sensible management of a lead. What Elmas did in the 89th minute was the opposite of sensible.

Venezia Are in Trouble

Five losses from five completed Serie A matches in the sample window. Thirteen goals conceded. Zero clean sheets. Now six from six with this result. The goals against tally across those five previous matches was 13. In those five matches, Venezia kept a clean sheet exactly zero times. They have conceded to every opponent they have faced.

Their attacking output is not the problem, as the stats today showed. They had the ball, they pressed forward, they hit the woodwork. But they cannot defend at this level. They are giving up goals in clusters and it is costing them every single week. That is a defensive accountability crisis. Whoever is responsible for organising that back line needs to look hard at what is happening.

Atalanta were not at their best either. Two injuries on the books, a few too many big chances missed, and a red card in the final minutes. But they got the job done. Three points. 3-1. Clinical in the moments that mattered. Venezia can have all the possession they want next time. The basics still win matches. They always will.
