AEK Athens did what they needed to do. One goal, no goals conceded, three points. Răzvan Marin stepped up and curled a free kick into the net on 21 minutes and AEK defended it from there. It was not always pretty. It was not always comfortable. But it was enough. End of.

The Goal That Decided It

The thing is, a free kick goal in the 21st minute changes the entire shape of a match. LASK suddenly had to come and find something, and AEK were happy to let them try. Marin's delivery was the difference. One moment of quality, one moment of execution, and that was the match settled as a contest for large stretches of the second half.

AEK had 18 shots in total compared to LASK's 11. They won 60 duels to LASK's 39. They completed 15 successful dribbles to LASK's two. The basics were being done right. You win your individual battles, you win your match. Simple.

A Match That Boiled Over

This one had an edge to it from early on. Marko Nikolić picked up a yellow card for time wasting in the 11th minute. In the 11th minute. That tells you everything about the atmosphere and the attitude on the pitch from the very start. Both sides were at it.

Luka Jović was booked for arguing in the 40th minute, which is the sort of thing that makes you shake your head. You are in a Champions League qualifier. Keep your head. Focus on the game. Jović was then involved in a VAR check at the 65th minute, and he was eventually substituted off at the 82nd minute. Whether that was precautionary or a consequence of his earlier behaviour, the result was the same. AEK managed without him and saw the game out.

LASK were not blameless either. Melayro Bogarde was carded for a foul on 42 minutes. Andrés Andrade followed him into the book on 80 minutes. And their manager, also named Marko Nikolić, collected a yellow card at the same time. That is two cards for a Marko Nikolić across the two teams inside the same match. I have seen a lot of football. That is a new one on me.

LASK finished with two yellow cards. AEK collected one. Fourteen fouls from LASK, eight from AEK. Listen, if you are giving away that many free kicks against a team with Marin in their side, you are handing them weapons. That is unacceptable at this level.

Where LASK Failed to Compete

LASK had the ball. Fifty-one per cent possession against forty-nine per cent for AEK. Slightly more passes completed on the night. But possession without penetration is nothing. Zero accurate crosses. Zero. AEK put six accurate crosses in. LASK managed none from fifteen attempts. That is not bad luck. That is a lack of quality in the final delivery, and no amount of passing it around the back four corrects that.

LASK created three big chances and missed all three of them. Three big chances gone. That is accountability right there. You get those opportunities in a Champions League qualifier and you do not take them, you go home. The desire to put the ball in the net was not matched by the execution. Their keeper made two saves, AEK's keeper made three. The margins were tight enough, but LASK never really looked like they were going to get their goal.

The substitutions from LASK told a story of desperation rather than control. Florian Flecker and Alessandro Schöpf came on at 65 minutes. Sasa Kalajdzic arrived at 74 minutes. Three changes to try and find a way back into it. None of them worked. When you are chasing a game in the 74th minute in Greece, you are already in trouble.

AEK's Standards on the Night

AEK came into this having kept clean sheets in both of their previous two Champions League matches in this rolling sample, including a 4-0 win over Levski Sofia. That defensive attitude did not disappear tonight. They made 15 interceptions to LASK's seven. They blocked nine shots. Nine. That is bodies on the line. That is desire. That is what competing looks like.

The home side's dribble numbers are worth noting too. Thirty-one dribble attempts, fifteen successful. LASK managed ten attempts and completed just two. AEK were sharper, more direct, more willing to take players on and make things happen. That is attitude. That is the difference between a team that wants to win and a team that hopes to win.

Lovro Majer was one of the players brought off late on, replaced by Kervin Arriaga in added time. Aboubakary Koita also made way for Mijat Gacinovic. AEK saw it out with composure. No drama. No late panic. They knew what they had and they protected it.

The Verdict

AEK Athens got the job done in a match that had more heat than quality at times. One goal from a set piece, a disciplined defensive display, and a willingness to compete for every second ball. That is the blueprint. LASK had enough of the ball to cause problems and did not. Their discipline let them down, their delivery let them down, and their finishing let them down.

AEK will not care about any of that. They will care about the result. One-nil. Clean sheet. Job done. The standards were there when it mattered.
