SJ Earthquakes vs Minnesota United Preview: Sliding Quakes Host Equally Wobbly Loons in Western Conference Mid-Table Madness

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Last updated 16 August 2026. Right, we are seven days out from this one and I've had a proper look at the numbers. SJ Earthquakes hosting Minnesota United. Western Conference. Sunday 23 August. 3:30 in the morning UK time, which means I'll be watching this on my phone under the covers like a man with absolutely no self-respect. Brilliant.

Where Both Teams Actually Are Right Now

So let's get into it. The Earthquakes are sitting third in the Western Conference with 33 points from 18 games. Decent enough on paper. But look at the fixtures, and more importantly look at the recent form, and there are some serious alarm bells going off in San Jose right now.

Their last five games overall? One win, one draw, three losses. Goals for: eight. Goals against: thirteen. That is not the form of a team that fancies itself as a genuine playoff threat. The form string reads LDLWL and the momentum slope is negative across every single context I can find. Home, away, overall. It is all pointing downward. Someone at that club needs to have a word, mate.

At home specifically over the last five, they've managed one win, two draws and two losses. They're only averaging seven shots per game at home and just three on target. Three! And their average possession sits at 29 percent at home which is... look, I don't even know what to say about that. How are you at home and you've got less than a third of the ball? That tells you a lot about how this side is set up.

Minnesota United come in tenth in the Western Conference with 24 points from 18 games. Now here is where it gets interesting. Their overall last-five form reads DDLDL. No wins. Zero. Three draws and two losses. Their momentum slope in that window is plus 0.2 overall which technically means they're... improving? The draws are stacking up rather than the defeats, I suppose. Glass half full and all that.

But away from home in the last five, Minnesota have actually been decent. Three wins, two losses. LLWWW. They went on a little run there. The problem is that run seems to have dried up given the overall numbers. Honestly this is one of those games where both teams are just vibing in mid-table mediocrity and we're all watching to see who blinks first.

The Bits That Actually Matter for Your Bets

Right. BTTS. I'm going big on this one. Both teams to score looks absolutely nailed on when you dig into it properly. The Earthquakes have seen BTTS land in 80 percent of their last five home games. Minnesota have seen it hit in 80 percent of their last five away games. Both sides have not kept a single clean sheet in their last five matches overall. Not one. The Earthquakes' clean sheet percentage at home over the last five is literally zero percent.

I actually looked at the numbers for once and the over 2.5 goals market is worth a shout too. Earthquakes are at 60 percent over 2.5 at home in the last five. Minnesota are at 80 percent over 2.5 in their last five away. This does not feel like a nil-nil to me. Not even close.

Now the xG stuff. You know I have to mention it and then immediately laugh at it. The data shows Minnesota sitting on an xG for of 18 against an xG against of 13.2 this season. Which apparently means, according to the robots, that they should be scoring more and conceding less than they actually are. 20 goals scored, 25 conceded from 18 games. So the xG, that beautiful made-up witchcraft number, reckons Minnesota are basically unlucky. Sure mate. Whatever you say.

The Earthquakes by contrast have 37 goals scored and 24 conceded across the season which genuinely is a solid return. The issue is it's not matching their recent form at all. Something has shifted in the last few weeks and we don't fully know why yet.

Team News and Injury Situation

Honestly? The data sheet is coming up blank on injuries for both sides right now. No reported absences, no suspensions flagged, nothing. Which either means everyone is fit and raring to go, or the information just hasn't filtered through yet at this stage. We're seven days out so keep an eye on both clubs' official channels as we get closer to Sunday. I'll be updating this as soon as anything comes through.

The Prediction

Look, neither of these teams is in great nick. The Earthquakes at home should give them an edge but their home form this season has been genuinely underwhelming. Three wins, two draws and three losses at home in the last ten. That is not a fortress. That is a door that's been left open.

Minnesota are winless in five overall but they've nicked results on the road before this little wobble. I reckon this ends level. A draw feels right for two sides who both look a bit lost right now. But the goals... the goals should flow regardless of who gets the points.

My prediction: SJ Earthquakes 1-1 Minnesota United. And yes I'm putting BTTS on it. Don't @ me.

Jay's Acca Corner

Right so this goes into the Saturday Special... well the Sunday Special this week given the time. BTTS at San Jose. Stick it in the builder alongside whatever else you fancy. My season record remains absolutely catastrophic and we are trusting the process. Well. We are calling it trusting the process. My bank account has a different word for it.

You heard it here first. Seven days out. Let's see how this ages. Back to the drawing board if it doesn't. And let's be honest, it probably won't. But that's football, mate. That's what makes it scenes.
